Apps for public transportation

Rejseplanen (Journey planner)

The easiest way to find your way around both Aarhus and Denmark is with the 'Rejseplanen' (Journey Planner) app, which allows you to search the connections of trains and buses to reach your destination. In the app you type your current position and desired destination, and it will provide you with the best bus, train, and/or walking directions to reach your final destination. The app can be downloaded via the Apple/Play store. The app is only available in Danish, so for English you can use their website.

Rejsebillet (Travel ticket)

The Rejsebillet app allows you to buy single tickets, commuter cards, and specialty tickets for the city buses (yellow), the regional buses (blue), the trains and the trams in all of Denmark.

You can purchase your ticket to and from all danish airports in the app. Be aware that the ticket between Aarhus C and Aarhus Airport counts as a special ticket.

Commuter card allows for unlimited travel with bus, train and tram. You can chose different time periods and varying number of zones according to your needs. For the majority of students two zones will be enough to go to and from university. The monthly price for two zones is around 435 DKK.
The app can be set up with your payment card and is available in both Danish and English from Midttrafik’s website

AU Find

The AU Find app helps you locate buildings, lecture halls, and staff members at Aarhus University. It provides detailed information about staff, buildings, and university units, with all addresses displayed on an interactive map integrated with Google Maps for easy navigation. What is the key tag for?

Make sure to remember your keys and keep them safe

When leaving your room and residence, please be aware that the doors might automatically lock behind you. If this is the case, please remember to bring your keys with you at all times.

Please note, that if you lose your key, you will be charged up to 6000 DKK to cover the expenses of lock conversion and/or key replacement.

If you lose your key, please find relevant information under the tab "In case of emergency".

Door phone system

If you want guests to be able to reach you through the door phone system, please send an email to [email protected] with the following information:

  • Your name
  • Your housing address (including floor and room number)
  • Your mobile number

You will then receive a notification on your mobile when someone rings your door via the door phone system.

Instructions on how to answer the door phone
When called on the door phone the number +4589428000 will appear on the mobile device, from here you can take the call directly, and answer the person awaiting your acceptance to enter the establishment. If you wish to grant the person access to the building, then all you have to do is press ‘5’ on your mobile device.

Tip: You can register the number in your contact book.

We would appreciate it if newly arrived tenants would test the system themselves, before calling the administration.

Changing the battery in the door lock

When the lock on your door starts blinking red

If the lock on your door begins to blink with a red light, it means the batteries need to be replaced soon. Otherwise, the lock will stop working.

Please remember to contact the caretaker to have the batteries replaced.

If you forget to contact the caretaker

If you are suddenly unable to enter your apartment because the batteries have died, you can replace them yourself by following the steps below.

You can borrow tools from the Housing Department Board, and you can buy new batteries in most supermarkets. You will need 2 AA batteries.

Please note: If you choose to call the 24-hour Acute Call Service or a locksmith (Byens Låseservice), you will be charged for the service — approximately 900 DKK.

How to change the batteries yourself

  1. Loosen the screw
Use a 2.5 mm Unbrako key or a thin Torx 10 to loosen the screw through the bottom opening.
The screw will not fall out — it is held in place by a spring.
  2. Remove the battery case and replace the batteries
Pull the battery case out from the bottom of the lock and replace the batteries.
If it is difficult to remove:
    • Check the screw located under the battery case.
    • If this screw is sticking out, it can block the battery case.
    • Simply screw it back in using a star-tip screwdriver.
  3. Reinsert the battery case
Slide the battery case back into place and tighten the screw again.
  4. Done!
You’ve just saved yourself 900 DKK.

House rules

Make sure that you are aware of and follow the house rules during your stay.

Cleaning

We advise you to clean your apartment weekly as this helps to limit damages and excessive wear.

Waste sorting and "Pant"

Waste sorting

In Denmark, sorting and recycling waste and garbage is an everyday practice. By sorting our waste properly, we can contribute towards its reuse. Materials such as glass, plastic, metal, paper and small cardboard items can be recycled and transformed into new products.

Residual waste should always be disposed of in trash bags, securely tied with a knot.

Please ensure that you are familiar with the waste sorting process. If needed, you can ask the caretaker or your dorm mates to locate the appropriate containers.

"Pant" (the Danish deposit and return system)

"Pant" is a Danish system for recycling cans and bottles. Each time you buy drinks in cans or bottles with a deposit mark, you pay a deposit named 'pant'.

You get your deposit back by returning empty cans and bottles using reversed vending machines in your local supermarket.

The Danish deposit mark is a series of dots under two arrows in a circle. The letter in the deposit mark indicates how much you pay and therefore, how much you will get back when returning the bottle.

Protecting your bed

On top of your bed, there is a top mattress, a mattress protector and waterproof cover. These protective layers are designed to protect your bed and maintain hygiene standards. You can find the names of the protective layers and their proper order in the image below.

Please note, that for hygienic reasons it is mandatory to use a bed sheet on top of the waterproof cover. It is also mandatory to use a pillowcase and duvet cover.

How to put on bed linen

Smoke detector

A smoke detector is installed in your housing.

It is very important that you never remove the smoke detector - not even if it starts to make a loud noise. If you remove it, an automatic message will be sent to the fire department, causing a guard to turn up at your residence. This can cost up to 10.000 DKK, and if they find no reason for the call, you will have to pay for this yourself.

If you hear any noise from the smoke detector and there is no fire, what you need to do is open the window and air the housing at once. As soon as fresh air enters the room, the smoke detector will stop after 20 seconds. If the smoke detector continues to make noise, the fire department will be sent to your address. Therefore, it is very important that you open the window and air the housing straight away to avoid unnecessary expenses.

Ventilation system

The ventilation at your residence must not be blocked or in any other way be closed, as this will cause the system to not work properly. In case of problems with the ventilation or if you have any questions about how  the ventilation works, please contact the caretaker for help (see the caretaker tab).

Furniture and kitchen equipment

The furniture and kitchen equipment in your residence is provided by AU Housing.

If any of the furniture or kitchen equipment is missing or damaged, please contact AU Housing. If you have not yet submitted the moving-in checklist, please inform us about any missing or damaged furniture or kitchen equipment through the moving-in checklist.

The furniture and kitchen equipment must be left in the same condition and quantity as when you moved in (except for normal wear and tear). The cost of missing or damaged items will be deducted from your deposit.

You find the vacuum cleaners in a closet in the basement near the laundry room (you need your key to get in). If they’re not there, it’s because some of the other residents haven’t put them back. If that’s the case, you should contact your caretaker.
