Aarhus University, International Staff Office, offers a number of services and resources for international PhD students, researchers and their accompanying families.


Professional welcome setup

Aarhus University’s International Staff Office will help you and your family make a soft landing in Denmark. We can assist you in a wide range of practical matters such as registering with Danish authorities, opening a bank account, and taking out insurance. We can also provide you with information about the cost of living in Denmark and other important on-arrival issues.

Getting Started in Denmark event

Our Getting Started in Denmark orientation and registration event enables you to register with all the main Danish authorities in half a day. At this event, you can get your EU residence document, your CPR (social security) number and your NemID. 

At the orientation session, you will hear about important on-arrival issues, such as Danish healthcare, private insurance, converting your driving license and opening a bank account, etc.

AU Relocation Service

International Staff Office offers personalised one-on-one assistance to international researchers relocating to Denmark to work at AU.

The relocation service is offered for international professors and postdocs.

Relocation Service for Professors

International Staff Office offers assistance to international researchers relocating to Denmark to work at AU as an assistant, associate or full professor.

International employees will get information about and assistance with all non-academic and non-contractual issues related to relocating to Denmark. Information and assistance is on an individual basis and covers the different phases of the relocation process.

New employees are offered a pre-arrival meeting (in Aarhus, on Skype, over the phone, or via video link) to prepare the relocation process and to discuss practicalities such as housing, registration, schools and daycare for children etc.

Relocation Service for Postdocs

Researchers relocating to Denmark for a postdoctoral position can benefit from the AU Postdoc Relocation Service.

The Relocation Service for postdocs provides information about and assistance with all non-academic and non-contractual issues related to relocating to Denmark. The service includes information about how to find accommodation, how to register with the public authorities, etc. Information and assistance is on an individual basis and covers the different phases of the relocation process.

Expat Partner Programme

AU Expat Partner Programme provides dedicated and personalised assistance to the partners of our international researchers (from postdoc level upwards).

The programme focuses on the individual partner and his or her objectives and goals. It offers a comprehensive support, both with regard to professional and social aspects of settling and thriving in Denmark.

Among other things, the programme offers an introduction to the Danish labour market and professional and social networks, career counselling, personal coaching and cross-cultural training.

Danish education for international staff

We offer international staff members and their accompanying partners the opportunity to learn Danish at beginner and advanced levels. The courses are part of the official Danish Education, which is offered to all internationals that move to Denmark. Courses are offered by 3 different Danish language schools. You can choose between a variety of courses (an intensive crash course, a semester course or online options).
