Housing application Aarhus

Non-EU full-degree students

As a new tuition-paying student or AU scholarship recipient arriving at Aarhus University for the first time, you can use the AU Housing service to find accommodation in Aarhus for the first part of your stay (maximum 12 months and the length of the housing contract will depend on availability.) If you wish to choose this option, please read about the application process below.

Any questions? You find answers to many questions at the FAQ. If you have additional questions, don't hesitate to contact the housing team at housing@au.dk

AU also has locations outside Aarhus. Do you need housing in Herning or Emdrup, please find informat here:

Before you apply

  1. A booking fee of 600 DKK will be charged when accepting a housing offer from AU Housing.
  2. Read the terms and conditions of housing.
  3. Be aware of the deadlines: autumn: 1st May, spring: 1st November. We do not handle housing applications received after deadline.
  4. You do not need admission papers in order to apply for housing.
  5. Decide whether you want to use the AU Housing service or if it is better for you to find housing on your own in Aarhus.
  6. Read the information about the housing options that AU Housing offers. Note that it is not possible to apply for specific dorms when applying through AU Housing.
  7. If you wish to apply for housing through AU Housing you have to fill in an online housing application. In order to do this, you first have to create an account in the Self-service system (if you don't have one already) and next you can find and fill in the online housing application.

Acces mit.au.dk (Self-service system)

If you wish to apply for housing via AU Housing you have to fill in an online housing application. In order to do this, you first have to access https://mit.au.dk/ (Self-service system).

  • If you already have an AU ID, please use this as your user ID in order to log in.
  • If you don’t have an AU ID, please create an account in the Self-service system. Find directions on creating a Self-service account here.

Fill in your housing application

  1. Once you have access to the Self-service system, you can fill in your online housing application
  2. At the housing application form you can request your contract to start on the 1st or 15th of any month. If we can't find an available room for you from the requested date, we will try to find a room for you 14 days before or after the requested date. Check carefully when your eventual intro programme starts and plan according to that. You may have to arrange accommodation at a hostel for the first nights.
  3. At Self-service system you can choose different application forms. Choose this: Erasmus Mundus, Joint Programmes, Tuition paying students, Scholarship Recipients and Full degree students..
  4. At the housing application form you will be asked for a contact person. Write: BA Admission (bachelor) or MA Admission (master).
  5. Be aware that you can apply for accommodation through AU for a maximum of 12 months. During your temporary accommodation via AU Housing you are expected to find a housing solution for the remaining study period yourself.
  6. You will be asked to prioritize which type of housing you prefer.
  7. Be aware, that it is NOT possible to apply for a specific location or a specific dorm and note, that in case we can't find a room for you, you will have to find a room either via Student Housing Aarhus or at the private market.

The housing allocation process

What happens next?

  1. You will receive an email with a housing offer from the housing office when we have allocated you a room. You can expect the email between 6.5. and 1.7.
You can find information about most types of housing here. If you can’t find information about the place you have been allocated you can contact us at housing@au.dk.
  2. Make sure that emails from housing@au.dk and housing@adm.au.dk don't end in your spamfilter. Change the settings in your inbox so it allows emails from these two addresses.
  3. When you have received the email, you must confirm acceptance of the offered lease in the Self-service system within 48 hours. Please find instructions on how to accept/decline here. In order to accept the offered lease you must pay the first month’s rent via an online card payment system, after which the room will be reserved for you. If we do not receive your payment and acceptance within 48 hours, your housing offer will be cancelled. Therefore, it is important that you check your emails every day in the period from 6.5.-1.7. Be sure to have access to a payment card (credit or debit) before you receive your housing offer.
  4. If you are offered a room to sublet, you must contact the landlord as soon as possible, sign the leasing contract and transfer the first month’s rent and a security deposit to the landlord’s bank account.  You must arrange how and when to collect the keys with the landlord.
  5. Unfortunately, we don't have rooms for all applicants. If we are unable to find you a room, you will receive an email from us before 1.7.

Cancellation

Cancellation

  1. Not admitted: If you accept a housing offer before you are admitted to AU, and hereafter find out that you are not admitted, you can cancel your reservation and receive a full refund.  You have to send an email to housing@au.dk soonest after receiving the admission information.
  2. Admitted: If you need to cancel your accommodation, you must contact housing@au.dk immediately. If you cancel your accommodation more than 6 weeks before your leasing contract starts, we will cancel your contract without any costs. In that case we will refund your payment to your bank account. If there is less than six weeks until the start of your leasing contract, we will send you an invoice for 1-2 month’s rent depending on the specific leasing contract. There are no exceptions to this, meaning that the housing office is NOT responsible for eventual delays in your visa-application, withdrawal from your study programme, your eventual health problems or whatever reason for your delay or necessary cancellation, and you will therefore be billed for cancellations made later than 6 weeks before your contract starts for WHATEVER REASON you have to cancel.

Arrival

  1. You might have a lot of questions on practical matters. You can find answers to many of these here.
  2. After arrival, make sure that you sign your leasing contract and hand it in to AU Housing at the International Centre (unless you have been allocated a room to sublet, in which case you need to send the signed leasing contract to the landlord before arrival.)

You will be offered temporary accommodation

Temporary accommodation only

You can stay in housing provided via AU Housing for a maximum of 12 months. If the duration of your studies exceeds 12 months, we recommend that you already now consider how you will find your next place to live. You find more information here. Don't forget to consider the problem of furniture, as your room through AU Housing will be furnished, but your next accommodation might not have furniture.

About housing through AU

About housing offered via AU Housing

Students will be placed in student residences, shared-facilities houses or private housing. Read more about these types of housing here. The rooms are not located at campus, but are scattered around the city. We are not able to guarantee a specific location of your accommodation. In most cases you can expect a maximum of 30 minutes travel time to campus.

All rooms offered via AU Housing have basic furniture: Bed, table, chair and lamp. You need to bring a duvet, pillow, bed linen (your bed is 90 cm x 200 cm) and towels. These items can also be bought cheaply in supermarkets in Denmark. AU has encouraged previous tenants to leave a duvet and pillow, so you may be lucky to find these items in your accommodation. However, this cannot be guaranteed.
