Apply for housing through AU Housing

Erasmus Mundus

As a new student on an Erasmus Mundus Master programme or a Joint Programme, you can use the AU Housing service to find accommodation in Aarhus for the first part of your stay (maximum 12 months.) If you wish to choose this option, please read about the application process below.

Erasmus interns, exchange students and other international students, please find information about your housing options here.

Before you apply

  • Read the terms and conditions of housing and read the general information carefully.
  • Be aware of the housing application deadlines: 1 May (autumn term), 1 October (spring term.)
  • Decide whether you want to apply for housing through AU or if it is better for you to find housing on your own in Aarhus.
  • A booking fee of 600 DKK is charged IF you accept a housing offer from AU Housing. If you receive and decline a housing offer you will not be charged anything.

Application

  • If you wish to apply for housing via AU Housing you have to fill in an online housing application. In order to do this, you first have to access https://mit.au.dk/ (Self-service system).

    • If you already have an AU ID, please use this as your user ID in order to log in.

    • If you don’t have an AU ID, please create an account in the Self-service system. Find directions on creating a Self-service account her

  • Once you have accessed the Self-service system, you can fill in your online housing application by using this application form: Erasmus Mundus, Joint programmes, Tuition paying students, Scholarship recipients and Full degree students
  • Housing application deadlines: 1 May (autumn term), 1 October (spring term.)
  • At the housing application form you can request your housing contract to start on the 1st or 15th of any month. If we can't find an available room for you from the requested date, we will try to find a room for you 14 days before or after the requested date. Check carefully when your eventual intro programme starts and plan according to that. You may have to arrange accommodation at a hostel for the first nights.
  • You will be asked about a contact person. It is the person you have been in contact with previously, for instance Bettina Andersen or Mette Glerup Thomsen.
  • Only one person is allowed in a single room. If you need accommodation for two persons, you can apply for a one-bedroom apartment. Read about housing for couples here. If you want to live with a friend, you can apply for a single room in an apartment (type 4) and write the name of your friend in the comment section.
  • You can apply for accommodation for a maximum of 12 months. If you need to stay longer, we recommend that you sign up at the waiting list at www.studenthousingaarhus.com (the longer you are at the waiting list, the easier for you to get your preferred accommodation when your lease via AU Housing ends. Therefore it will be a good idea to sign up soon after your arrival.)
  • A housing reservation via AU Housing requires that you have access to a credit card. You can't use the AU Housing service if you don't have/have access to a credit card. In that case you can instead look for housing options at the private market.

What happens next?

  •  If you apply for the autumn term, you will hear from us before 1 July. If you apply for the spring term, you will hear from us before 15 December. You can find information about most types of housing here. If you can’t find information about the place you have been allocated you can contact us at housing@au.dk
  • Make sure that emails from housing@au.dk and housing@adm.au.dk don't end in your spamfilter. Change the settings in your inbox so it allows emails from these two addresses.
  • When you have received the email, you must confirm acceptance of the offered lease in the Self-service system within 2 days. Please find instructions on how to accept/decline here. In order to accept the offered lease you must pay the first month’s rent via an online credit card payment system, after which the room will be reserved for you. If we do not receive your payment and acceptance within 2 days, your housing offer will be cancelled. Therefore, it is important that you check your emails regularly.
  • If you are offered a room to sublet, you must contact the landlord as soon as possible, sign the leasing contract and transfer the first month’s rent and a security deposit to the landlord’s bank account.  You must arrange how and when to collect the keys with the landlord.
  • We send ONE housing offer per applicant only. As the number of applicants exceeds the number of available rooms, we will unfortunately not be able to send you a second housing offer. Therefore you need to consider other housing options, if you choose to decline the housing offer from AU Housing.

Cancellation

  1. If you need to cancel your accommodation, you must contact housing@au.dk immediately. If you cancel your accommodation more than 6 weeks before your leasing contract starts, we will cancel your contract without any costs. In that case we will refund your payment to your bank account. If there is less than six weeks until the start of your leasing contract, we will send you an invoice for 1-2 month’s rent depending on the specific leasing contract. There are no exceptions to this, meaning that the housing office is NOT responsible for eventual delays in your visa-application, withdrawal from your study programme, your eventual health problems or whatever reason for your delay or necessary cancellation, and you will therefore be billed for cancellations made later than 6 weeks before your contract starts for WHATEVER REASON you have to cancel.

Arrival

Arrival

  1. You might have a lot of questions on practical matters. You can find answers to many of these here.
  2. After arrival, make sure that you sign your leasing contract and hand it in to the Housing Office at the International Centre (unless you have been allocated a room to sublet, in which case you need to send the signed leasing contract to the landlord before arrival.)

More information

Temporary accommodation only

  1. If the duration of your studies exceeds 12 months, you should already now consider how you will find your next place to live. You can consider www.studenthousingaarhus.com, www.aarhusbolig.dk or options at the private market.

About housing offered via AU Housing

  1. Students will be placed in student residences, shared-facilities houses or offered subletted accommodation. The rooms are not located at campus, but are scattered around the city. We are not able to guarantee a specific location of your accommodation. In most cases you can expect a maximum of 30 minutes travel time to campus.
  2. All rooms offered via AU Housing have basic furniture: Bed, table, chair and lamp. You need to bring a duvet, pillow, bed linen (your bed is 90 cm x 200 cm) and towels. These items can also be bought cheaply in supermarkets in Denmark. AU has encouraged previous tenants to leave a duvet and pillow, so you may be lucky to find these items in your accommodation. However, this cannot be guaranteed.
