Practical information

Studying at Aarhus University

Use of laptop during your stay

We strongly recommend that you bring your own laptop during your stay at AU Summer University. It is not possible to borrow a computer from the university.

Study culture

As an international student, you may be surprised by the study culture at Aarhus University. The study culture Denmark is informal and the hierarchy between lecturers and students is flat and not very strict.

Lecturers are addressed by their first name
Rather than Ms., Mrs., Mr., Dr. or Professor, most lecturers will ask you to call them by their first name.

Active participation in class
Most courses use a combination of big lectures and smaller classroom-based seminars. In the seminars, you are expected to participate, for instance by asking questions, taking part in discussions or doing presentations. Critical thinking and freedom of speech are important at Aarhus University and it is okay not to share all of your lecturer’s opinions.

At some courses, there is a requirement for 80% attendance as a prerequisite for the exam. The requirement for 80% attendance applies to the live part of the online teaching. This is stated in the course description if there is a requirement for attendance.

Academic Information

Courses

The AU Summer University programmes are, in general, elective courses and carry 5 or 10 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System), which equals a workload of 125-150 hours for 5 ECTS courses and 250-300 hours for 10 ECTS courses. During AU Summer University, you will receive information about the courses, recommended literature, time schedules and examinations through the AU Summer University website and intranet.

Study methods at AU and in Denmark

At Aarhus University there is a high degree of freedom to be matched by your own responsibility and self-discipline. However, please also note that in some courses class attendance is actually a pre-requisite for participating in the exam. The dialogue in the classroom between lecturer and student is central to the teaching at AU and students are expected to take an active part in the academic discussions during class. Many lecturers also require students to make oral presentations once or twice during the course.

Another distinctive feature of Danish university education is the academic environment, which may seem informal to foreign students. Professors and other staff members often chat informally with the students and socialize with them during breaks. It is also worth pointing out that Danish higher education is characterized by an analytical approach. Students are thus not only expected to accumulate and reproduce knowledge but also to compare, analyse and evaluate on an individual basis. Most courses are followed by both Danish and international students. We hope that the classroom environment will pave the way for social interaction between international and Danish students, and we encourage internationals to break the ice with Danish students and to work in groups.

The Danish Grading Scale

The Danish grading scale has seven grades of which five are passing grades and two are failing grades as listed below. The Danish grades correspond to the ECTS grades. The ECTS grading system was developed by the European Commission in order to provide common procedures to guarantee academic recognition of studies abroad.

The Grading Scale

Examination

The examinations may be written or oral. There are five frequently used examination methods at Aarhus University. How frequently each examination form is used varies from faculty to faculty and lecturer to lecturer:

  • Oral examination on the examination syllabus
  • Oral examination on a set subject plus the examination syllabus
  • Written examination on a topic from the examination syllabus
  • Assignment on a fixed subject (takehome exams)
  • Assignment on an optional subject (takehome exams)
  • Coursework activities during class

The exam form for your specific course is stated in the course description.

Travelling to Denmark & Aarhus

Depending on where you are travelling from, the most common ways of arriving are:

  • Fly to Copenhagen, take a connecting flight to Aarhus, take the bus downtown
  • Fly to Copenhagen, take a train from the airport to Aarhus
  • Fly to Billund, take the bus to Aarhus
  • Take the train all the way to Aarhus
  • Take the bus all the way to Aarhus

Airports

Aarhus Airport – Tirstrup: www.aar.dk

Location: 45 km northeast of Aarhus. There are direct flights to Aarhus Airport from some European cities and Copenhagen. The airport bus is linked to most incoming/outgoing SAS flights and stops both close to the University and downtown Aarhus. It takes 50 minutes to get to Aarhus city centre and costs around 130 DKK.

Billund Airport: www.billund-airport.com

Location: 100 km southwest of Aarhus, next to Legoland. Aarhus is also serviced by another international airport, Billund Airport. There is an airport bus from the airport to downtown Aarhus (bus 912X; from the Aarhus Bus Station) which takes 1 hour 30 minutes and costs around 120 DKK.

Copenhagen Airport – Kastrup: www.cph.dk

Location: Copenhagen. Copenhagen Airport is Denmark’s main international airport and there are direct flights to Copenhagen Airport from most European cities. When you arrive at Copenhagen Airport, you can either continue your flight to Aarhus or Billund Airport or catch a train or bus towards Aarhus. The journey between Aarhus and Copenhagen airport costs about 330 kr.

Trains

From Copenhagen

You can either take a bus or a train from Copenhagen Airport to Copenhagen’s central train station, and change to a direct train to Aarhus. The train takes 3–3.5 hours and they leave for Aarhus twice per hour. For more information on train departure times, please visit the website of DSB, Denmark’s State Railway company, at www.dsb.dk.

International connections to Aarhus

Aarhus is relatively easy to access by train from a variety of cities and European countries. The Danish network of trains is well developed. Please bear in mind that when you book tickets on Danish trains, you currently need to book a seat as well. There is however no additional fee to book a specific seat.

Aarhus Central Station (Hovedbanegården)

Aarhus Central Station (Hovedbanegården) is located in downtown Aarhus at the very end of the main shopping street. Outside the station, you will find a taxi rank and bus stops for most city buses.

Bus

From Copenhagen and within Denmark

FlixBus operates within Denmark and many other European cities and offers a cheaper alternative to the train, with an additional discount for students. The service between Copenhagen and Aarhus departs from Copenhagen Central Station or Copenhagen Airport and runs several times a day www.flixbus.dk. Another alternative is Kombardo Expressen, another bus company which will take you from Aarhus to Copenhagen via ferry. Prices start at 99 DKK. Tickets can be booked on: https://www.kombardoexpressen.dk/. You can also use Rejsebillet app, where the price is constant at about 330 kr.

International connections to Aarhus

For international bus connections, the aforementioned Flixbus is a possible choice. If you wish to receive a student discount, it is very important that you bring a certificate of enrolment from either AU or your home university with you on the bus! To travel around Europe you can use Omio app to find all types of public transport.

Aarhus Bus Station (Rutebilstationen)

The Aarhus Bus Station (Rutebilstationen) is located 5 minutes’ walking distance down the street from Aarhus Central Station. Some city buses also stop at the Aarhus Bus Station and most regional buses arrive/depart from there.

Car

It is expensive to own a car in Denmark, so many people choose public transportation instead. If you wish to use your foreign car in Denmark, you must register it within 14 days upon arrival in Denmark. Registration of vehicles is administered by the Danish tax authorities, where you can also find rules and tax rates for imported cars. Some countries must also convert their driving license within 14 days after establishing residence. Please check all the information before bringing your car to Denmark at www.skat.dk.

Our courses are primarily held at Nobel Parken, where you'll find a few public parking spots available. The specific conditions for each parking spot are clearly indicated by signage near the parking areas.

Getting around in Aarhus – busses, bikes etc.

As you will soon find out, Danes are very fond of bicycles. Even during the winter, you will see most Danes using their bikes as a means of transport. However, the local bus network is well developed and the yellow city buses will take you all over the city. If you bring your own car, you will be able to find parking both in the city centre and on campus. Whilst parking on campus is free but time-limited, you will need to pay on the streets outside of campus. Once you find your parking space, you need to locate the closest parking meter in order to pay for a parking ticket. Please note the parking fines are expensive in Denmark.

If you need to get somewhere fast and easily, you can always call one of the city taxis although they are quite expensive compared to other countries. However, they are safe, reliable, and comfortable.

Aarhus Taxa: +45 89 48 48 48 - they also have an app you can order a taxi from. Read more about it here.
DanTaxi: +45 86 16 47 00 - they also have an app and a website you can order a taxi from. Read more about it here.

VOI Scooter

For fun and easy transportation in Aarhus it is possible to rent an eco-friendly electric scooter running up to 20 km/h. The red/orange scooters are placed all over town and are easily accessible. Download the Voi Scooter app to your phone to get started and look up where the closest electric scooter is located. It costs 30 DKK to unlock the scooter and 1,5 DKK/minute. You can leave the scooter on almost any sidewalk in the city for the next one to pick it up. Be aware that it is mandatory to wear a helmet when riding a motorized scooter in Denmark.

Donkey Republic

Donkey Republic is an even more flexible bike rental offer as you pay by the minute. The orange bikes are situated all over Aarhus. Download the Donkey Republic bike app to look up the closest bike(s). Unlock the bike using the app and pay after finishing the ride. The price for 30 minutes = 15 DKK, 2 hours = 50 DKK, 1 day = 100 DKK and 2 days = 175 DKK. You can end the ride and leave the bike in any of the Donkey-spots.

Swapfiets

You can also rent a bike for a full month here in Aarhus for only DKK 179 (with student discount) + a sign up fee. This prices includes service if it breaks down. In case this happens, they will come to you and swap it to a new one, thus their name Swapfiets. After placing the order, the bike will be delivered to you. Please note that the minimum contract period is one month with one month notice. Read more about it here.

If you choose VOI, Donkey Republic or Swapfiets you will need to study the Danish traffic rules. You can read more about essential bike equiptment, helmets, and the traffic regulations here

Public Transportation

The local bus system

The city bus network of Aarhus is well developed. The yellow city buses can take you all over the city – from 05:00 to 00:00. There are also night buses on Fridays and Saturdays. Midttrafik is the bus company that runs the yellow buses and on their website you will find the timetables for the different bus routes. One-way tickets can be bought from a ticket machine in the bus for DKK 26 (in cash) or via the Rejsebillet app. The machines only take coins.

If you would like, you can purchase a one month pendler card in the Rejsebillet app. This will allow for you to travel in most of Aarhus for 435 kr. Before purchasing your ticket, make sure that your accomodation and the location of your courses are within the zones you choose.

To go from the central train station to Nobelparken by bus, you can go by these buses:
Bus 12 towards Mejlby

Bus 16 towards Elev or towards Mejlby

Bus 18 towards Lystrup

Bus 100 towards Hornslet

Bus 118 towards Randers

Bus 123 towards Rønde or towards Ebeltoft

Bus 200 towards Hinnerup

Light Rail

It is also possible to ride the new light rail train. The light rail ticketing works the same way as in the buses and you can also use the Rejsebillet app for it. To go from the central train station to Nobelparken take the L2 towards Lisbjerg and get off at "Aarhus Universitet"

Journey planner

For planning your journey in Aarhus, or for travelling within Denmark, the website Rejseplanen.dk provides an excellent tool (similar to Google Maps).

Useful apps/useful links

For your Smartphone

Rejseplanen (Journey Planner)

The easiest way to find your way around both Aarhus and Denmark is with the 'Rejseplanen' (Journey Planner) app, which allows you to search the connections of trains and buses to help you get to where you are going. The app allows you to search for an address from your current position, and thus shows you the appropriate bus, train and/or walking directions to get to your final destination. The app can be downloaded via the Apple/Play store. The app is only available in Danish, so for English you can use their website.

Rejsebillet

The Rejsebillet app allows you to buy single tickets, commuter cards, and specialty tickets for the city buses (yellow), the regional buses (blue), the train, and the light rain in all of Denmark.

You can purchase your ticket to and from all danish airports in the app. Be aware that the ticket between Aarhus C and Aarhus Airport counts as a special ticket.

Commuter card allows for unlimited travel with bus, train and lightrail. You can choose how many zones and for how long, but for two zones for a month for the price is 435 kr pr. month. For the majority of students two zones will be enough to go to and from university. The app is available in both Danish and English from Midttrafik’s website. The app can be set up with your payment card, which is helpful if you find yourself without coins for the bus.

Midttrafik Live

The Midttrafik Live app allows you to see where your buses are at any given time. The app is only avaliable in Danish, but it is very intuitive to use even if the language is not understood. it can be downloaded in the App/Play store or on Midttrafik's website. Midttrafik is the company running the buses in Midt Jylland, so the app will not function is you go outside that area.

AU Find

You can use the AU Find app to find information about a person, a building or a unit at Aarhus University. All the addresses are shown on a map, and they are integrated with the Google Maps Directory, which gives you directions. You can also add a person directly to your contacts for quick reference later. Download the AU Find app on this page.

Pulse

Pusle is the app connected to Brightspace, which is AU’s shared learning platform. Here you can access your courses, communicate with teachers and fellow students and find material and other relevant course-related information. you can find a runthrough of how to download and use the app here.
