Each year, we plan a social programme with events every day throughout Summer University!

Our social programme activities are available to all AU Summer University students - locals as well as internationals.

We cannot wait to show you around the vibrant city of Aarhus and facilitate fun and unforgettable social activities for you and your fellow AU Summer University students!

NB: Sign-up for social activities will be possible 3 weeks before each term (11 June for term 1 and 1 July for term 2).

Terms and Conditions for Social Events

  1. All events on this page are for students attending AU Summer University 2024. Most of the events are aimed towards international students.
  1. You must sign up for the events prior to attending, even if the event is free. Sign-up will be possible from 11 June for events that take place during term 1 and between terms (2 July - 19 July) and from 1 July for events that take place during term 2 (23 July - 9 August). 
  1. If an event is full, you can sign up for the waiting list. Should a spot become open, we will offer it to the first person on the waiting list.
  1. For events where we have to enter as a group, you must show up at least 15 minutes in advance to be able to participate in the event.
  1. If you are unable to attend an event that you signed up for, please send an email to summeruniversity@au.dk no later than 12.00 noon on the day of the event. If you wish to get the paid amount back, you must send the email to summeruniversity@au.dk no later than 12.00 noon two days before the event. For example, if an event takes place on 6 July at 19.00, you must send the cancellation email to summeruniversity@au.dk before 12.00 noon on 4 July to get the paid amount back.

2 July - Campus Tour

Are you feeling lost at the new campus? Would you like to feel a bit more at home at Aarhus University? Don't worry, we got you! On the first day of your term, we have planned a campus tour, where we will show you the most important places for you to know during your stay at Aarhus University.

Place: Outside by the Information Desk, building 1452. 

Time: 14:15, 15:15 and 16:15

Price: Free!

Spots: 30 persons per trip.

3 July - Dinner and Outdoor Games in Uniparken

Let’s have dinner and play games! Aarhus University is home to the beautiful University Park in the middle of campus. The park is frequently used by students as well as the rest of Aarhus’ citizens – especially in the summer. The park has a hilly terrain, lakes, and paths, which are used by students to walk from one end of campus to the other. Therefore, there is no better place for us to enjoy a picnic than here. All you have to do is bring your own food and drinks and then we'll bring the outdoor games!

Place: Outside The Lake Auditoriums, building 1250, Bartholins Allé 3, 8000 Aarhus C.

4 July - City Safari: Highlights of Aarhus

Explore the inner city of Aarhus on a curated trip to see both new, old, hidden and more obvious tourist parts of the city. When you are done with this tour you will know Aarhus like the back of your hand. When we meet, you will be divided into groups, and send you out on your own, one person in each group will need to download the app Action Bound.

Place: Store Torv, 8000 Aarhus (in front of Aarhus Cathedral)

5 July - Welcome Bar at Studenterhuset

The best thing after a long week at school is a fun evening with your friends. Studenterhuset has many different boardgames, but you can also just take your time and hang out with your new friends.

Studenterhuset has everything in their bar - tea, coffee, soda, beer, wine,  and pizza! Just for Summer University students, you can get a beer for just 25 kr.

Place: Nordre Ringgade 3, 8000 Aarhus

Time: 17:00, but you can drop in from 12:00.

6 July - Aarhus bowlinghall: Let's go bowling!

Let's go bowling! Bowling is a great activity to get to know each other and have a great time. Most nations have bowling, so you probably know the game already which is a great opportunity to show off your skills. We'll be five people on each team. We'll go there on a Saturday so you can get your partymode on and have some beer if you feel like it. Aarhus Bowlinghal also has a restaurant so if you want to, you can go there before we meet up and have dinner with your friends.

7 July - KØN: Aarhus' Gender Museum

The gender and sexuality topic gets more and more present in the public eye all the time. Therefore, we found it appropriate to visit the gender museum in Aarhus called KØN, which translates to GENDER. Until 2021, the gender museum was called the "Women's Museum", but the name was changed to include all genders and sexualities. The museum also includes a very cosy café where you will be able to grab a cup of coffee and a piece of cake afterwards. Join us when we visit probably the most woke museum in Aarhus!

8 July - Canoe-trip on Aarhus Å

The word "Aarhus" is old Norse for "where the river meets the sea". Therefore it is only apropiate to experience the city is by canoeing down Aarhus creek or the Brabrand lake. It is a popular activity in Aarhus to rent canoes and row down the creek, which runs through the whole of Aarhus centrum. We'll meet at the renting place and then spend the afternoon rowing through the city, so you can get a different view of the city.

All participants must wear the life jacket provided by the renting place, so we can all enjoy the trip under safe conditions.

9 July - Street Food and Outdoor Cinema

Delicious food and a great movie in the open air – is there a better combination? We don’t think so, and therefore we invite you to join us for an evening at Aarhus Street Food and Outdoor Cinema! Aarhus Street Food is a permanent street food market located in old buildings at the bus station. It has over 30 street kitchens and bars serving food from all around the world; from traditional Danish smørrebrød and tarteletter to Vietnamese Bánh mì’s. So whether you want to taste Danish food or have the food from your home country, you can find something here – including vegans and vegetarians. Besides being a street food market, Aarhus Street Food is also the place for outdoor cinema. We’ll be enjoying food from Street Food together first and then afterwards watching a great movie on the enormous screen.

10 July - ARoS: Aarhus' largest Art Museum

ARoS is one of the largest art museums in Northern Europe and it is a must-see when visiting Aarhus. ARoS offers international exhibits, contemporary art and the famous Rainbow, which gives you the best view of Aarhus. One of Aarhus most famous buildings with a literal rainbow on top. The exhibitions change regularly so it won't be the same if you have visited it before. And you don't have to be an art student to enjoy this visit. It is the perfect location for Instagram friendly pictures and the odds of you leaving the gift shop without a purchase are very low. There is an area for eating a packed lunch, where you can find the AU student workers, at 18:30, if you want to eat your packed lunch with them, or if you have any questions.

11 July - Bonfire and Marshmellows on the Beach

It is time for a fun evening at Den Permanente. This is a beautiful and very popular beach placed next to Riiskov forest, with a beautiful view to the newly constructed Aarhus Ø.  If we are lucky with the Danish weather, it might be warm enough for a dip in the water, but either way we will have a fun time, starting a bonfire, roasting marshmellows and playing games. You can bring your own towel if you want to swim in the ocean, or a blanket to sit on.

12 July - Pubquiz at Studenterhuset

This Friday we will meet for a Pubquiz at Studenterhuset! Studenterhuset has made a quiz just for you - the Summer University students. So it's time to brush up on your trivia, and maybe look up a few facts about Aarhus- this might come in handy. It is time to find your most knowledgeable friends, make a team name and show everyone else, that you know the most trivia. If you don't have a group - don't worry everyone will be put into groups!

13 July - Tivoli Friheden: Aarhus' Amusement Park

Let’s ride some rollercoasters together! One of Aarhus’ biggest tourist attractions is Tivoli Friheden amusement park. With its 28 rides and 13 eateries, you are guaranteed to be entertained and well-fed. The park is located in Marselisborg Forest, which is one of the biggest forests in Aarhus, giving the park its beautiful and green surroundings. The park offers something for everyone, so there are different options depending on how wild you want your rollercoasters to be. We can’t wait to spend some Saturday-time with you!

14 July - Marselisborg Deer Park and Infinite Bridge

Is there a better way to spend your afternoon than petting cute deer in a beautiful forest? We don’t think so! Therefore, we’ve planned a trip to Marselisborg Deer Park. We will meet at the Infinite bridge, a beautiful permanent art exhibit right next to Varna palace. We will go together to the deerpark, which is a part of the beautiful Marselisborg forest. The forest is around 750 hectares, and placed in the southern part of Aarhus. The landscape is hilly and the park is filled with sika deers, fallow deers and wild boars. The forest is a good representation of what a lot of Danish nature is like. The deers are very tame so if you bring some carrots or apples, they will eat directly from your hand. It's definitely a unique experience!

15 July - Botanical Garden and the Greenhouses

The Botanical Garden has a wide variety of exciting plants. Inside the greenhouses you can explore more than 2000 plants from the mediterrainan, the dessert and the tropical rain forest. There is also a lovely café and shop in the greenhouses, if you want either a cup of coffee and a cake or a poster and a totebag to bring home!

Outside the greenhouses you can explore the Botanical garden - one of Aarhus' largest parks. You can explore different types of Danish nature behind the green houses, showing costal slope, beach, moor and meadow. In front of the green houses you can also explore differnt types of plants, not native to the Danish nature, which can still survive in the temperet climate.

17 July - The Old Town: Denmark's Market Town Museum

The Old Town is an open-air museum where it’s truly like walking into a time capsule. The Old town is a living picture of life in Denmark from 300 years ago and up to 1974. The town not only allows you to experience 75 historical houses from 24 different cities in Denmark. You will get a feeling of what it was like to live back then and to see how Danes made their way of living, for example by talking to the live actors dressed in clothes from that time. From the outside, you can see how the shape and colors of the buildings have changed and inside you can have a look at things connected to some great authentic Danish musicians and politicians from a revolutionary time. Here, you’ll get an idea of how these influential people have contributed to shaping Danish culture.

18 July - Aarhus Bryghus: Visiting Aarhus brewery

Do you like beer? And are you fascinated by how it is made? Beer is a very big part of Danish food culture, and we are very proud of our beer in Denmark. Many cities and towns have their own, local brewery, including Aarhus. We have planned a guided tour and beer tasting visiting Aarhus brewery where they will tell us all about how their beer is made. The tour lasts about 1,5 hours and a few beers are included in the price.

19 July - End of Term Perty at Studenterhuset

Go get your dancing shoes and get yourself ready for a blast of a party! The perfect way to end your time in Aarhus is with your friends at Studenterhuset, where you will have the perfect way to say goodbye to three unforgettable weeks in Aarhus.

21 July - Bordgames at Aarhus' Boardgame Café

Get yourself ready for the most cozy café in Aarhus. Aarhus Brætspilscafé has a wide array of fun games to try with everyone you have already met, but it is also the exact time to meet new friends for term 2! 

At the café you can get, coffee, tea, beer or small snacks. They do allow you to bring food from outside, but the drinks have to come from them!

7 August - The Old Town: Denmark's Market Town Museum

The Old Town is an open-air museum where it’s truly like walking into a time capsule. The Old town is a living picture of life in Denmark from 300 years ago and up to 1974. The town not only allows you to experience 75 historical houses from 24 different cities in Denmark. You will get a feeling of what it was like to live back then and to see how Danes made their way of living, for example by talking to the live actors dressed in clothes from that time. From the outside, you can see how the shape and colors of the buildings have changed and inside you can have a look at things connected to some great authentic Danish musicians and politicians from a revolutionary time. Here, you’ll get an idea of how these influential people have contributed to shaping Danish culture.

8 August - Aarhus Bryghus: Visiting Aarhus brewery

Do you like beer? And are you fascinated by how it is made? Beer is a very big part of Danish food culture, and we are very proud of our beer in Denmark. Many cities and towns have their own, local brewery, including Aarhus. We have planned a guided tour and beer tasting visiting Aarhus brewery where they will tell us all about how their beer is made. The tour lasts about 1,5 hours and a few beers are included in the price.
