AU Housing offers furnished rooms for temporary accommodation to international PhD students, visiting/guest PhDs, and screening grant applicants. These rooms are located in three dorms in Aarhus: The IC Dorm, The Vennelyst Dorm, and the Teknolog Dorm. You can stay for a maximum of 12 months. If you plan to stay longer, you can use this temporary accommodation period to get acquainted with Aarhus and find a more permanent housing solution on your own.
To be eligible for this housing, you must be a PhD student, visiting/guest PhD student, or screening grant applicant at AU and have not previously lived in Denmark for more than three months. It's important to note that apart from the three specified dorms (Teknolog kollegiet, Vennelyst kollegiet, and the IC Dorm), PhD students are not allowed in student dorms in Denmark. Additionally, PhD students cannot apply for housing through Student Housing Aarhus nor can they sublet dorm rooms.
When you fill in your housing application form, you can indicate what kind of accommodation you would prefer, but, due to the limited number of rooms available, we cannot guarantee to offer you a specific room.
It is always possible to shorten a lease with due notice (4-6 weeks) but it is not possible to extend a lease. Consider this when you fill in your application form.
Read here about the different housing options offered by AU Housing. Be aware, that it is not possible to apply for housing in a specific location, but you can at your housing application instead prioritize different types of housing. Minimum stay is one month, but applicants applying for a longer stay are prioritized.
Traditionally universities in Denmark don't have accommodation facilities at campus, and both students and staff live outside campus. AU disposes of a few rooms on campus, but most rooms are located off campus, normally with a travel time to campus of maximum 30 minutes by public transportation.
Therefore you have to be prepared to commute to/from campus every day. You can use www.journeyplanner.dk to find information about busses and trams. Many applicants worry a great deal about this fact, but the public transportation in Aarhus is fast and convenient and after a few days you will get used to it.
Important about accommodation at a dormitory
PhD's arriving with their spouse can apply for a an apartment (it is not allowed to live two persons in a single room.) The apartments are small (35-40 m2 brutto) and therefore not suitable if you have an older child or more children. Read more here.
AU Housing provides temporary accommodation for up to 6 (12) months only, and we cannot extend contracts beyond this period. If you require accommodation for a longer duration, we suggest that you begin your search for permanent housing soon after moving into your temporary accommodation. The earlier you start your search, the greater your chances of finding a suitable place to live. We recommend using the AU Staff Housing Portal to explore alternative housing options.
