Housing application for PhD students at AU campus Aarhus via AU Housing

Aarhus University offers a housing service for international Phd students and PhD guest-students who haven't lived in Denmark previously.

Housing options

AU disposes of a number of single rooms  at the IC dorm (exclusively for PhD students), at the Teknolog and Vennelyst dorms, at other dorms in Aarhus and in a number of privately rented houses. Often we are also able to help the applicant finding a room/apartment to sublet via our Staff Housing Portal. Rooms can be rented for a minimum of 1 month and a maximum of 6 (in few cases 12) months. Applicants staying longer must start searching for new accommodation while living in the AU provided lease. AU Housing is not able to extend a contract and prioritises to help as many newly arrived PhD students as possible in stead of providing longer contracts for few applicants.

AU has a limited number of rooms available and very often we receive more applications than the number of vacant rooms. Rooms are allocated on a first come, first served basis. If no rooms are available from the preferred move-in date, we try to find a room with an earlier or later move-in date.

AU disposes of very few rooms available to PhD students with a partner and/or children. Applications for family accommodation should be handed in minimum three months before expected move-in date.

Housing application process

It is not possible for institutes/AU employees to apply for housing on behalf of the guest. Instead we recommend that you send your visitor this link. We recommend that housing applications are sent minimum two months before expected move-in date. PhD students arriving in August/September should send in their housing application minimum three months before expected arrival due to the difficult housing situation in Aarhus in the late summer months.

The housing application process consists of the following steps:

  • Housing applicants must set up an account on AU's self-service system.
  • When the applicant is logged on to the self-service system, they must fill out the relevant housing application form.
  • The applicant's contact person or supervisor at AU will then receive an email, which requests them to verify via a link that the applicant is a guest or employee at AU.
  • After the contact person has responded to the email, the housing applicant will receive a confirmation email from the contact person. This will allow the applicant to complete their housing application and submit it to AU Housing via the self-service system.
  • AU Housing will then try to find accommodation, and eventually a housing offer to the applicant. The applicant can either accept or reject this offer.
  • If the applicant wishes to accept the housing offer, then they must pay the first month's rent via a 'Dibs' payment system. This system requires an applicant to have a credit card. The security deposit will only be charged later on, together with the second month's rent (usually after arrival).
  • Payment. Unfortunately, AU Housing cannot repost invoices regarding rent/deposit to institutes/centres due to the fact that our administrative system does not support this service. Payment of rent and deposit can only be done with a credit card at https://mit.au.dk/selfservice/ . If institutes/centres wish to pay rent/deposit for international students or staff members, this can be done by issuing them with an AU credit card or by a staff member paying with his/her AU credit card. When settling the payment in RejsUD, a project number or grant funds must be indicated and a copy of the housing offer must be attached to the settlement.
