The course ‘Oncology and Public Health’ focuses on oncology from a public health perspective. Plenary lectures of this course will be provided by an expert in psychosocial oncology, and coordinator (since 2011) of the 2-months course ‘Oncology and Public Health’ in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. In this 3-weeks version of that course, lectures will be provided that focus on medical aspects of cancer, public health issues related to cancer, psycho oncology, but also specific topics such as return to work after cancer and palliative care. Preventive strategies and the effectiveness of various interventions aiming to reduce long-term consequences of cancer diagnosis and treatment, and to improve the quality of life of cancer survivors will be discussed as well.
To highlight the issues that cancer survivors are facing, during primary cancer treatment, as well as after completion of treatment, during long-term survivorship, cancer survivors will share their experiences with the students (video or in person). Students will be asked to reflect upon these patients’ experiences. Finally, in work groups, the students will work on a short and concise literature review, answering an important research question on an Oncology and Public Health problem.
