Niche Strategies & Sustainable Competitive Advantage in Agribusiness

The course is built around some main topics:

  • Strategy and niche concept: starting from the generic strategy framework, we will describe the evolution of the strategic framework as it emerges from academic literature in the field. We will explore the relationship between niches and sustainable competitive advantage.
  • Agrifood systems: the features of agrifood will be presented. In particular, we will explore the structure of the value chain and the competitive dynamics that are affecting the business.
  • Trends and innovation: innovative dynamics will be presented and explained. Also trends in agrifood will be described, and an overview of the impact of EU policies will be provided.
  • Traditional food products and niche agrifood products: An overview of EU traditional agrifood products will be provided, and the strategic implications of denominations will be explored.

Course specific:

To apply for the course you must either be enrolled in a bachelor's degree, have a bachelor's degree or have passed a qualifying entry examination.

Academic profile

Alessio Cavicchi is a Full Professor of Agribusiness, Rural Development and Branding at the Department of Agriculture, Food and Environment of the University of Pisa. He received his PhD in Economics of Food and Environmental Resources from the University of Naples “Parthenope” (Italy) and previously a Master of Science (MSc) in Food Economics and Marketing at the University of Reading (UK).
