Language Requirements

As an exchange student at Aarhus University, you will attend courses that are taught in English. You will be expected to actively participate  in class discussions, study groups and projects. You must also be able to write academic papers and take written exams.

AARHUS BSS

Exchange students at Aarhus BSS are not required to document English language proficiency.

You are expected to to have English language qualifications comparable to the English B level from the Danish upper secondary school (gymnasium). International qualifications comparable to this level are:

  • TOEFL test results of at least 560 (paper based test) or 83 (internet based test)
  • IELTS test with a minimum score of 6.5 points
  • C1 level obtained by examination from a CEFR-validated English language course 

FACULTY OF ARTS

Exchange students who wish to apply for courses at the Department of English are required to provide documentation of their English language proficiency. This may be done in one of two ways:

1. The student can meet the minimum English language requirements established by Aarhus University

or

2. The student can submit a letter from their home university confirming that courses and related examinations have been conducted through the medium of English

Exchange students nominated by the AU Department of English partner institutions or English degree programmes at other universities are exempted from these requirements.

Applicants to other Faculty of Arts programmes are not required to document English language proficiency, but are expected to have English language qualifications comparable to the English B level from the Danish upper secondary school (gymnasium). International qualifications comparable to this level are:

  • TOEFL test results of at least 560 (paper based test) or 83 (internet based test)
  • IELTS test with a minimum score of 6.5 points
  • C1 level obtained by examination from a CEFR-validated English language course  

FACULTY OF HEALTH

Applicants for the International Semester in Medicine at the Faculty of Health are required to provide documentation for English language qualifications by means of one of these tests:

  • TOEFL test results of at least 560 (paper based test) or 83 (internet based test). Aarhus University does not accept the TOEFL ITP test. The Aarhus University TOEFL code is 8935.
  • IELTS test with a minimum score of 6.5 points
  • Cambridge ESOL examinations. English B – Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or First Certificate with grade A. Applicants must upload their Confirmation of Entry, stating candidate ID number and candidate secret number, which are not stated on the test result itself.
  • CEFR-validated English language course (e.g. DAAD, 5-stars in all areas). English B – C1 level

 The test result must be no more than two years old at the time of application.  

Some applicants are exempt from this requirement:

Applicants with a qualifying exam, Bachelor’s or Master's Degree from: 

  • USA
  • Canada
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • Great Britain
  • Scotland
  • Ireland

Applicants holding a Danish/Nordic/Duborg/International Baccalaureate (from the IB diploma programme)/European Baccalaureate (from the “ScholaEuropaea”) entrance examination. The transcript must show an English level which the Danish Agency for International Education considers comparable to a Danish B/A level in English.

Courses in the International Semester in Medicine are the only ones taught in English. Applicants to any other courses are expected to be fluent in Danish. 

FACULTY OF NATURAL SCIENCES

Applicants at the Faculty of Natural Sciences are required to upload proof of English language proficiency together with your application for admission.

You must upload

  • your test result
    or
  • your test registration receipt

If you receive your test result after the application deadline, you must upload your test result to your application no later than the documentation deadline 1 November, 2020.

You must take one of the tests below, and the test result must be no more than three years old at the time of application.

  • TOEFL: Paper-based test: at least 560 Internet-based test: at least 83.
  • IELTS: IELTS Academic test result of at least 6.5 points and equivalent of C1 level. Please be aware that B2 level is not accepted.
  • Cambridge English Advanced with grades A, B and C or 180 points as a minimum on the Cambridge English Scale.
  • Cambridge English First  with grade A or 180 points as a minimum on the Cambridge English Scale.

You are exempt from uploading an English test if:

  • You are enrolled as a student at a university in USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, Scotland, or Ireland, Germany, The Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, or Faroe Islands.
  • You are currently enrolled in an English-taught Bachelor’s or Master’s programme. Please be aware that you must upload a letter of confirmation from your home university.
  • The language test requirement has been waived in the exchange agreement with your university. Check with your university's exchange office for more information. 

FACULTY OF TECHNICAL SCIENCES

Applicants at the Faculty of Technical Sciences are required to upload proof of English language proficiency together with your application for admission.

You must upload

  • your test result
    or
  • your test registration receipt
