The Department of Public Health, Faculty of Health, Aarhus University invites applications for one or more positions as professor in research fields of relevance for the Department of Public Health including research related to the four strategic research areas: Applied Public Health, Clinical Public Health, Disease Ethology and Research Methodology and Sport Science. The positions are permanent full-time. Employment is planned to start on 1 August 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.  

As a Professor at the Department of Public Health, you will be part of an ambitious and internationally recognised department, where we collaborate to advance public health through research focused on the promotion of health and the prevention, treatment and alleviation of disease. We engage in broad collaborations internally and externally, sharing our knowledge with citizens, decision-makers, public and private sector businesses, and other researchers nationally and internationally.

The Department of Public Health contributes to teaching medicine, public health science, sport science, health science and nursing. You will have approximately 200 colleagues at the department, including 80 academic staff members and a similar number of PhD students. Job Responsibilities

As a professor, you will share responsibility for developing the department's research and teaching environment and contribute to implementing the faculty's overall strategy. You will be expected to contribute to the development of the department by leading high international standards and by maintaining high academic and didactic standards in teaching. With your excellent collaborative skills and your broad academic network, you will enhance academic development at Aarhus University and development of the university’s profile nationally and internationally.

Your main tasks will be:
  • To do research at a high international level, including publications in top international journals and publishers, and communicating your research in national and international academic networks.
  • To attract substantial external funding to support the activities of your research group.
  • To collaborate on your research with private and public-sector stakeholders as well as research-based consultancy.
  • To develop international networks and collaborations in research and teaching.
  • To teach, supervise and examine Bachelor’s and Master’s degree students.
  • To supervise PhD students and contribute to the development of the faculty's PhD courses.
  • To contribute to assessment and committee work at Aarhus University and elsewhere.
  • To disseminate your research to the public.

Start package: Depending on qualifications and needs, support to establish your research at the department can be negotiated.

You will report to the head of department.

Your competences

You have an excellent track record within your area of research and have established yourself as a prominent researcher with one or more stays or positions at internationally recognised research institutions. You possess documented teaching qualifications at a high level. Further, you have broad international collaborations, including experience in research partnerships preferably with private and public-sector stakeholders. You have a proven ability to attract significant research funding from national and international funding bodies.
As a leader you are supportive and motivational, inspiring other researchers and building trusting relationships with students, colleagues and partners. As a lecturer, you teach based on the latest and most relevant knowledge in a clear, engaged, and comprehensive manner, based on carefully selected didactic principles. As a supervisor, you are competent, inspiring, supportive and responsible.

In collaboration with your colleagues, you take responsibility for advancing the department's research and education to the highest international standards while ensuring a positive work environment. You view the department’s professional diversity as a strength and are eager to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration at departmental, faculty and university levels as well as outside the university - nationally and internationally.

We expect you to be fluent in oral and written English. International applicants are expected to learn Danish. Aarhus University will organise Danish teaching.

Terms of employment

  • In making the appointment, emphasis will be placed on a high degree of original production at an internal level and experience from teaching at different levels as well as contributions to the development of teaching activities and teaching material, hereby documenting that the applicant has developed the academic discipline from a research and teaching perspective.
  • Moreover, there will be an assessment of the applicant’s ability to perform research and teaching management tasks.

  • The appointment is in accordance with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (Akademikerne).
  • Remuneration is in accordance with the above, and the Salary agreement catalogue for staff at Health.
  • The yearly base salary for a fulltime professor is DKK 797.476,39 (including a position related supplement, a pre-agreed professor supplement and pension (17.1%)). Additional supplement(s) can be negotiated dependent on experience, special qualifications and performance of special functions. Professors have the authority to negotiate pay on their own behalf.
  • Researchers recruited from abroad are offered a special researcher tax scheme with a lower tax rate.
  • Travel and moving expenses may be covered according to the employee in question and, to a limited extent, the accompanying family.
