Are you interested in using single-cell approaches for identifying mechanisms behind the large effect of sex chromosomes on speciation in primates, then there is an opening for an up to 4-year postdoc in the research group of Mikkel Heide Schierup, Bioinformatics Research Centre at Aarhus University (Denmark). An ERC advanced grant funds the postdoc position.
 
You have a PhD in either bioinformatics, molecular genetics, population genetics, statistics, or similar qualifications with some experience in bioinformatics, population and/or statistical genomics. You will be responsible for setting up single-cell analysis (snRNA and scRNA as well as spatial transcriptomics) for testis samples of 16 different primate species. The current platforms are 10X chromium based as well as combinatorial barcoding (Parse bioscience approach). You will also generate libraries for sequencing and perform analysis of the ensuing data. You will join a multi-disciplinary group, which also works towards developing new analytical approaches and setting up bioinformatics pipelines.


Expected start date and duration of employment

This position is up to four years position with the earliest start date of May 15, 2023, or as soon as possible after that.


Job description

You will be responsible for setting up lab facilities for running single-cell experiments. You will design your own experiments and use this to address questions of your own choice within the overall project.

Possibilities include, but are in no way restricted to
  • Identifying differential gene expression between X and Y carrying haploid cells and how these change over primate evolution
  • Inference of differences in the molecular evolution of genes across spermatogenesis such as more positive selection in later stages
  • Inference on smallRNA evolution during spermatogenesis, specifically pachytene piRNAs
  • Identifying novel genes and their expression trajectories in spermatogenesis
  • Combine transcriptional evolution with population genetics analyses of introgression barriers in hybridizing species such as occurs in the wild between different baboon, macaque and gibbon species
  • Quantifying the quality of spermatogenesis across primates and relate that to breeding systems and fertility
The research group of Mikkel Heide Schierup currently include six PhD students and two post docs that all address evolutionary questions on mutation rate evolution, natural selection, and the evolution of the transcriptome using population genomics and transcriptomics data with a primary focus on primates
 

Your profile

Applicants should hold a PhD in either bioinformatics, molecular genetics, population genetics, statistics, or similar. The following skills will be an advantage
  • Proven experience in handling and analysing large genomic datasets
  • Proficient knowledge of coding in R/Python and high performance cluster environments.
  • Interest in evolutionary genetics.
  • High communication (verbal and written) and organizational skills


The department

At the Bioinformatics Research Centre we focus on developing computational methods for collecting, handling and analyzing genomic data. Research ranges from formulating models and theories about genome evolution, to constructing algorithms and developing computer programs to implement new analytical methods.
We have has a strong emphasis on molecular and genome evolution, molecular population genetics, firmly grounded in statistical and algorithmic approaches to bioinformatics. Our research spans from addressing purely theoretical questions, to program development, applications to large empirical datasets.
