The Department of Geoscience (DG), Aarhus University, Denmark, invites applicants for a faculty position at the Associate Professor level in Hydrology and Water Resources Management to begin on February 1, 2021. We are searching for a highly motivated scientist in the fields of hydrology and water resources management compatible with our interdisciplinary hydrogeophysical research.

The department
The Department of Geoscience currently employs around 110 staff including faculty, externally funded researchers, post-docs, Ph.D. students, and administrative and technical personnel. DG has a strong research profile spanning a broad range of geological and geophysical disciplines including Climate and Environment, Water, Energy and Natural Resources, and Deep Earth Systems. We have an outstanding research and teaching infrastructure including geophysical, geochemical, sedimentological and micropalaeontological laboratories, HF-laboratory, a class 100 metal-free clean-laboratory, and TCN dating facilities. We also have the largest pool of hydrogeophysical electromagnetic research instruments in the world. The department participates in numerous multidisciplinary research centers such as WATEC bridging core-disciplines within the Faculty of Natural Sciences and the Faculty of Technical Sciences.

The position and the candidate
The Associate Professor will contribute to research and teaching in the field of hydrology and water resources management. The focal areas will include but not be limited to (1) catchment-scale interactions between surface water and groundwater, (2) applications of hydrogeophysical data to the understanding of large-scale hydrological processes, contaminant transport and numerical modelling, and (3) providing decision-making support to water resource managers involving uncertainty considerations.

The successful candidate will have expertise in several of the following areas:
  • Environmental management of water resources at the catchment scale
  • Impact of climate change on hydrological systems with focus on mitigation and adaptation
  • Assessment of water availability and quality
  • Surface geophysical methods for developing hydrostratigraphical models and estimating hydrogeological properties of the substratum
  • Impact of anthropogenic activities on water resources including contaminant transport
  • Uncertainty quantification in the decision-making.
The appointee will fulfil the following criteria:
  • Hold Ph.D. in a natural science discipline
  • Strong record of international peer-reviewed publications
  • Experience in relevant academic teaching and student supervision at all university levels
  • Documented ability to attract external funding for research
  • Experience with interdisciplinary research approaches
  • Established partnerships with academic, state and private water-management organizations
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal relationships skills.
The candidate will be responsible for establishing a vibrant research environment and actively contribute to the ongoing research at DG including hydrogeophysics. You will teach relevant courses at all levels including numerical modelling of hydrological processes, and supervise B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. students. Cooperation with private industry, engagement in public sector consultancy, generating significant external funding for research, and involvement in public outreach are expected.

Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Formalities and salary range 
Natural Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include curriculum vitae, degree certificates, a complete list of publications including the H-index, information about research activities and teaching experience, and a statement of future research plans. Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations. Six weeks of paid vacation annually as well as about 17% of pension contribution are included
