How to apply for an academic position

You find available positions under Vacant positions on our website. Each job advertisement contains all necessary information on how to apply.

The application

The application and all relevant documents must be submitted via AU’s online recruitment system.  When you have submitted your application, you will receive an email verification in your inbox notifying you that the university has received the application. If you encounter any technical difficulties, please contact the relevant HR-department mentioned in the job advertisement.

The application must include the documents and attachments specified in the job advertisement, typically:

  • Application including motivation for applying for the position and your contribution to and visions for the position.
  • CV
  • Diploma
  • Documentation for your academic qualifications
    • List of publications
    • Publications including co-authorship declaration
    • Teaching portfolio

The next steps in the process

After the application deadline, an appointment committee advises the head of department on which applicants are the best overall match for the position. Through this shortlisting process, the head of department selects the applicants who will receive a thorough assessment of their professional qualifications. The assessment committee will then assess these applicants. The shortlisting process may differ from faculty to faculty.

If your application is not shortlisted for assessment, HR will inform you immediately after the shortlisting process is completed. Final rejections are sent at the end of the recruitment process.

If you are shortlisted for assessment, you will receive an answer by HR containing information about the assessment committee.

The next step is the job interview.

Prior to the interviews, you  may be called in to an event at the department, for example a lecture, a meeting with permanent academic staff, etc. so that you and the department management may  gain an impression of each other and you get an idea of  the tasks involved in the position.

Finally, the head of department will contact you to tell you whether you are accepted for the position or not.

The employment process differs from faculty to faculty and depending on the type of position.

The final candidate who is offered the position will be contacted regarding:

  • Certificate of employment
  • Work and residence permit
  • Holiday scheme
  • Pension scheme
  • Tax scheme

The recruitment process for academic positions at AU takes three to six months, depending on the type of position.
