VIDEO: Lecturer of the Year at medicine

Clinical associate professor of pathology, Steen Bærentzen, incorporates technology, art, literature and his sense of humour in his lectures. The students are now honouring him for this.

Judging by the applause, you might think that Vice-dean Charlotte Ringsted had announced the name of a rock star in the Lakeside Lecture Theatres at the medical students’ academic day. But instead it is clinical associate professor of pathology, Steen Bærentzen, who takes the stage to receive the award as Lecturer of the Year at medicine. And he is a popular choice. While the thunderous applause rings around the rows of students, Steen Bærentzen gets ready to receive the award, which he does – of course – with the help his iPhone as it is projected onto the big screen. The camera lens is first directed towards the diploma in front of him and then towards his son Albert and the rest of his family as they watch the presentation from the front row.

Steen Bærentzen receives the award for making his lectures accessible with quizzes, references to literature and art, and for making the complex simple and relevant.

His acceptance speech is an example of this. Steen Bærentzen shows an x-ray image of his daughter Marie’s lung infection ("the prettiest teaching example of lobar pneumonia!") and a picture of the giant Rubeus Hagrid and Madame Maxim from Harry Potter ("Where can you otherwise find acromegaly and gigantism at the same time?").

His inclusive style is exactly what has made his lectures so popular, meaning that you now need to come early to find a seat at his lectures, as said Charlotte Ringsted in her speech.

The students choose the Lecturer of the Year at medicine by ballot. The award is given at the medical students’ academic day, which this year took place on 3 March. In addition to the prize, Steen Bærentzen also receives DKK 25,000.
