Three researchers from Health receive diabetes research funding

Christopher Rohde and Kevin Marks – both medical doctors and PhD students from Aarhus University – each receive just over DKK one million to complete a PhD degree, while Professor David McIntyre from the University of Queensland receives DKK 350,000 towards a visiting professorship at Health. The Danish Diabetes Academy is providing the funding for all three.

Christopher Rohde, Kevin Marks and David McIntyre all carry out research into diabetes-related diseases and the health challenges that follow, and before long they will begin either a PhD degree or a visiting professorship at Health.

In his PhD programme, Christopher Rohde examines whether treatment with antidepressants among people with type 2 diabetes may have a positive effect on the development of physical complications, chronic pain and – ultimately – survival rates. The hypothesis is that it does.

Kevin Marks uses his PhD to study whether the risk of diabetes complications and psychological disorders in people with type 1 diabetes can be fully or partially predicted. The goal is to find those children with type 1 diabetes who are at risk, so they can receive special support at an early stage.

Together with his Danish colleagues from Health, David McIntyre has shown that Danish women with gestational diabetes differ from women in other parts of the world. During his stay in Aarhus, he will therefore investigate how we in Denmark provide the best possible treatment for both mothers and children in the most socio-economical way.
