Research grant will benefit Denmark’s best female athletes

How do the menstrual cycle and female hormones affect the presentations of young female athletes? Associate Professor Mette Hansen from Aarhus University will seek to answer this question in a new research project which is being funded by Team Denmark.

Associate Professor Mette Hansen from the Department of Public Health has received a grant of DKK 400,000 from Team Denmark towards her research into the effect of female hormones on body composition and the ability to perform. Her starting point is an issue faced by young female athletes in their everyday lives, as she will examine whether the use of contraceptive pills influences the response to strength training and whether performance levels vary during the menstrual cycle.

The scientific objective of Mette Hansen's research is to uncover the importance of female hormones for the skeletal musculature. The new studies add an extra dimension by also aiming to generate knowledge that can benefit some of Denmark's best female athletes.
