New professor: Our cancer treatment can be even better

The research into experimental particle radiotherapy at Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital is now being strengthened with the appointment of yet another new professor. In her new professorship, Brita Singers Sørensen will expand international research collaboration in the field of cancer treatment with particle radiotherapy, among other things.

Particle radiotherapy is a relatively new form of radiotherapy which enables medical doctors to hit tumours more precisely than with conventional radiotherapy using x-rays. The protons used in particle radiotherapy are in some cases gentler than x-rays, in part because the healthy tissue is less exposed to radiation and there are therefore fewer side effects.

Brita Singers Sørensen conducts research into the biological effects of particle radiotherapy, including inflammation and damage to healthy tissue, and how these differ from the biological effects of conventional radiotherapy. Her research also covers other forms of treatment such as immunotherapy for cancer treatment.

Part of her research is carried out in collaboration with European research colleagues, which has the advantage of enabling the acquiring and sharing of knowledge in this new field of research more quickly – all of which benefits Danish cancer patients.

The professorship is financed by the Novo Nordisk Foundation.
