Aarhus University has appointed Won Yong Kim as professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine. Won Yong Kim carries out research into MRI scanning of the heart and blood vessels. In addition to the professorship, he is also a consultant at the Department of Cardiology at Aarhus University Hospital.
MRI scanning has great potential in the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases, because rather than using X-ray beams or radioactive trace elements to form unique images of the body, the scanning makes use of powerful magnetic fields and radio frequency waves.
"MRI scanning constitutes a ‘diagnostic window’ to the heart that can contribute to a better and more gentle diagnosis of cardiovascular disease, as well as an increased understanding of the underlying disease mechanisms and complex interaction between lifestyle and heredity factors that lead to cardiovascular disease," explains Won Yong Kim.
He hopes that the professorship can help to improve the prognosis for patients with cardiovascular disease.
"The professorship means that I will have the opportunity to immerse myself in an area of heart diagnostics that I have been very preoccupied me since I studied at university. I hope it can contribute to continuing the progress that there has been in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases," says Won Yong Kim.
