New grant given to AU research into joint-preserving hip operations
Backed by a new grant of DKK 1.2 million from the Alfred Benzons Foundation, Clinical Associate Professor Stig Storgaard Jakobsen from Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital will for the first time study the effect of joint-preserving hip operations in the prevention of hip dysplasia.
The disease hip dysplasia leads to decreased hip function and pain and may lead to osteoarthritis. Hip dysplasia can be treated with a joint-preserving hip operation which improves the movement function and reduces the pain level. It is also assumed that the operation prevents osteoarthritis.
Clinical Associate Professor and Consultant Stig Storgaard Jakobsen will work together with Professor Inger Mechlenburg and Professor Kjeld Søballe to head a new research project which will seek to find out whether joint-preserving hip operations followed by strength training have a greater effect than strength training alone. The study is the first of its kind and is being carried out in collaboration with Oslo University hospital.
