New doctor traces serious diseases
Holger Jon Møller from Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital has recently defended his doctoral dissertation. He conducts research into how you can trace and curb serious diseases by means of a disease marker.
Holger Jon Møller researches in so-called biomarkers. By measuring them, it is possible to diagnose serious diseases before they lead to serious consequences. Holger Jon Møller's doctoral dissertation focused on a marker that goes under the technical term of ‘sCD163'. This marker can be measured in a simple blood test and is used to detect how a special part of the immune system (macrophages) is activated. In this way it is possible to investigate which stage a given inflammatory disease is in.
”By measuring the sCD163 marker in the blood, we can detect disease development at an early stage, which gives us the chance of treating it in time. For example, in patients with chronic liver disease, increased sCD163 is a sign of deterioration, which if left untreated can lead to haemorrhages and death. Another example is that a slight increase in sCD163 among overweight people suggests an early stage of diabetes, which can be prevented by , for example, lifestyle changes,” explains Holger Jon Møller.
The research into the markers has proved to be extremely useful in practice, and the new results from Holger Jon Møller and his research team are very promising. The results can therefore benefit patients who e.g. have diabetes, diseases of the liver and other diseases.
Holger Jon Møller attained a Master's degree in Medicine in 1990 and a PhD in 1997, both from Aarhus University. In 1999 he became a medical specialist in clinical biochemistry at Aarhus University Hospital, and in 2001 a consultant at the same hospital. He became associate professor at Aarhus University in 2002.
Holger Jon Møller defended his doctoral dissertation on 22 November 2013. The title of the doctoral dissertation is: Soluble CD163 (sCD163).
He was born on 23 January 1959 in Glostrup, Denmark. He is married and has four children.
