New Doctor of Medical Science investigates the gap in knowledge about lymphatic circulation

Medical doctor and PhD Niklas Telinius from Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital can now add the title of Doctor of Medical Science after successfully defending his higher doctoral dissertation on the physiology of the lymphatic system. His research will assist in learning more about the lymphatics and generating new ideas for medical treatment.

Our knowledge of the lymphatic system comes primarily from animal experimentation, which demonstrates major differences in the lymphatic circulation from species to species. So when Niklas Telinius focuses solely on the lymphatic system in humans in his dissertation, he finds himself in new territory in the hunt for the ‘missing link’ in the lymphatic systems of animals and humans.

The lymphatic system regulates the fluid balance in tissue and organs by removing excess fluid. Fluid accumulation in the body is seen both in the case of cancer and a range of cardiovascular diseases, but there is currently no medical treatment available which targets the lymphatics. The goal of Niklas Telinius’ research is to generate more basic knowledge about the lymphatic system, so that we can gain a better understanding of how conditions with fluid accumulation develop and ideas about how we should treat them.
