New Doctor of Medical Science helps osteoarthritis patients
Consultant and new Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc) Thomas Jakobsen from Aarhus University, Aarhus University Hospital and Aalborg University Hospital has used his higher doctoral dissertation to investigate how the lifespan of artificial hip prostheses can be extended. This can benefit patients with osteoarthritis in the form of fewer surgeries.
An artificial hip is a good form of treatment for osteoarthritis of the hip joint. But the durability of the hip prosthesis depends on how quickly the prosthesis fastens itself to the bone. And this is precisely what Thomas Jakobsen concerns himself with.
He has looked into whether treatment with osteoporosis medicine can get the hip prostheses to fit more firmly. Studies have e.g. demonstrated that local treatment with osteoporosis medicine maintains the bone around a prosthesis and enables it to fasten onto the bone better.
Thomas Jakobsen's research may enable patients to "make do" with one surgery, thus avoiding the need to replace the prosthesis because it has e.g. become loose.
