New Aarhus professor will strengthen treatment of mental disorders

Søren Dinesen Østergaard is a new professor at Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital, Risskov, Department for Depression and Anxiety Disorders. Here he will primarily conduct research into measurement-based treatment of mental disorders.

Around one in five people in Denmark will be afflicted by mental illness during their life. Mental disorders are one of the largest health burdens in our society and often have very serious consequences for the people living with them. Unfortunately, we only have limited knowledge of the processes which lead to mental disorders, and this fact makes targeted treatment difficult.

In his research, Søren Dinesen Østergaard focuses on questions related to what causes mental disorders and the best way to treat them. In his new professorship, he will have particular focus on what is known as measurement-based treatment, which is where continuous measurement of symptoms is used together with side-effects and overall psychological well-being to help guide treatment of the patient. The ambition is to optimise measurement-based treatment via research and, at the same time, implement the method in clinical practice for the benefit of patients.
