Million-grant to kidney disease researcher from AU
For the next four years, Professor Robert Fenton will head a project that will study chronic renal disease. The project has just received a grant of DKK 15 million from the Novo Nordisk Foundation.
Chronic renal disease is a major health burden worldwide and the treatments that are currently available are not effective. Often there is no sign of the disease before the kidneys are already badly damaged.
Working together with Clinical Professor Ewout Hoorn from the Netherlands, Robert Fenton will investigate the potential offered by a group of naturally occurring molecules and neurotransmitters as a new initiative against chronic renal disease.
The initiative is part of the Novo Nordisk Foundation Tandem programme, in which two researchers – one a clinician and the other a researcher doing basic research – collaborate. The objective is to share knowledge and work across disciplines to bring research in the laboratory and clinic closer together.
It is hoped that the project will provide a better understanding of the mechanisms behind the disease and form the basis for clinical use and, ultimately, prevention of chronic renal disease.
