International day of women and girls in science
Sunday 11 February was the UN’s international day to bring attention to the work to ensure equal opportunities for men and women in research. To mark the day, Aarhus University held an event on Saturday which featured interesting researchers.
For the second year in a row, Aarhus University held an event in connection with the UN’s International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
“It is a very important day because we want more women in science for longer – we want girls to see their role models,” says Ashley Pearcy, visiting scientist at the Department of Bioscience and initiator of the event.
The event, Women in Science, featured presentations from a number of female researchers about their latest research. There was also a panel discussion about women in research.
Again this year, it was the Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies (AIAS) that hosted the event.
In the video, you can hear Ashley Pearcy talk briefly about Women in Science.
Aarhus University has worked intensively for several years to attract and retain more female researchers. In 2016, the senior management team adopted an action plan for more women in research.
The action plan, which runs until 2020, aims to ensure equal opportunities for men and women in research, and to reduce barriers that may discourage women from pursuing a career in research.
