Increase in quota 2 applications to AU

Aarhus University now has the final figures on the distribution of quota 2 applications for the university's degree programmes. A total of 15,732 applications have been received via quota 2, of which 5,852 have Aarhus University as first priority. The final figures show a clear increase over last year of 5 per cent and 6 per cent, respectively. 

The increase is evident across all five faculties. IT degree programmes have shown particularly strong increases. Applications to economics, public health and European language programmes have also increased.

This year, Aarhus University has received 15,582 applications via quota 2, which is 9 per cent more applications than last year.

The number of applicants who indicated a degree programme at Aarhus University as their first choice has also increased. 5,802 chose a degree programme at Aarhus University as their first priority – this is also 9 per cent more than last year.

First-choice applications increased for degree programmes at all five faculties, which Pro-rector Berit Eika finds positive.

"We are delighted with the high level of interest in our degree programmes – and we are particularly pleased that so many applicants put Aarhus University at the top of their list. This suggests that we have a lot of motivated applicants in this round – and we know that motivation is crucial for sustaining your dedication to your degree programme," Eika says.

Marked increases in applications to IT degree programmes 

The increase was particularly evident in applications to AU’s IT programmes. A total of 479 quota 2 applicants indicated an IT degree programme at Aarhus University as their first priority – 30 per cent more than last year.

"Society needs IT competencies at the highest level, and Aarhus University has been focussing on educating more IT specialists for several years. This is the third year in a row where we’ve seen an increase in the number of applicants to our IT degree programmes, so everything indicates that we’re on the right track and that we have degree programmes that appeal to our young people,” Eika says.

The IT degree programmes include computer science, IT product development, data science, the IT technology engineer degree programmes and information studies.

Here is a brief overview of the distribution of applications to the five faculties:

The Faculty of Arts received 4,052 applications, 1,507 of which were first-choice applications. Generally speaking, there was a small increase in first-choice applications, and the progress is most significant in the fields of cognitive science, information studies, media studies and several of the European languages.

Aarhus BSS received 5,301 applications, 1,998 of which were first-choice applications. This is more than last year, and applications to all degree programmes have increased.

The Faculty of Health received 3,522 applications, 1,313 of which were first-choice applications. This is more than last year, and the progress is primarily seen in medicine and public health.

The Faculty of Natural Sciences received 1,191 applications, 409 of which were first-choice applications. This is more than last year, and this is particularly evident for the IT programmes computer science, data science and IT product development.

The Faculty of Technical Sciences received 1,516 applications, 575 of which were first-choice applications. The increase in first-choice applications applies primarily to the IT technology engineer degree programmes.

Facts about Quota 2 and the coronavirus

The coronavirus situation may lead to a need for greater flexibility, and Aarhus University is aware of this.

It remains to be seen how the coronavirus will affect the planned entrance examinations after Easter. Aarhus University administers in-person admissions tests for the medical degree programme and the technical and natural sciences programmes, and we are currently exploring various options if the tests cannot be administered as planned. All applicants to these degree programmes will receive more information if changes are made.
