Helicopter doctor appointed professor at Aarhus University

Jacob Steinmetz is new professor of emergency medicine and is affiliated with The Danish Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS). Here he will conduct research into the treatment that seriously ill and severely injured patients receive before they arrive at the hospital.

PhD and Consultant Jacob Steinmetz conducts research into the help that the ambulance, the emergency medical service vehicle and the emergency medicine helicopter provide to people who have an acute need for treatment outside the hospital – e.g. trauma patients or patients with cardiac arrest and a blood clot in the heart.

The professorship means that research into acute medicine is strengthened. Jacob Steinmetz, who himself is a medical doctor onboard the emergency medicine helicopter, will help coordinate prehospital research in Denmark and expand international collaboration with special focus on the emergency medicine helicopter.

Jacob Steinmetz begins his professorship at the Department of Clinical Medicine at Aarhus University on 1 June 2021. At the same time, he will continue working in The Danish Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) and as a consultant at the Rigshospitalet's Department of Anaesthesiology—Centre of Head and Orthopaedics. The professorship is financed by the Norwegian Air Ambulance Foundation.
