Guidelines for reporting of pharmacoepidemiology studies

The RECORD for Pharmacoepidemiology (RECORD-PE) checklist

A set of reporting guidelines specific to pharmacoepidemiological research has been developed and was published in the BMJ last week. DCE is one of several institutions that have helped construct the guidelines, named RECORD-PE. The aim is to ensure transparent reporting of pharmacoepidemiology studies based on routinely collected health data. RECORD-PE consists of a checklist with 15 items and should be used along with the existing RECORD and STROBE guidelines pertaining to studies using observational routinely collected data and observational studies in epidemiology, respectively. The RECORD and STROBE guidelines do not cover the complexity of studies within pharmacoepidemiology.

“We found there was a need for guidelines particular to pharmacoepidemiology studies as the design, analyses, and interpretation can be very challenging”, explains professor Henrik Toft Sørensen. “Both researchers and patients will benefit from improved transparency in the reporting of pharmacoepidemiology studies”, he adds.

RECORD-PE has been endorsed by the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology.
