Grant will help patients with chronic intestinal conditions

Associate professor and PhD Magdalena Janina Laska from the Department of Clinical Medicine and the Department of Biomedicine at Aarhus University receives DKK 750,000 from the Aage and Johanne Louise Hansens Foundation. The grant will go towards developing new technologies and strategies for the treatment of chronic intestinal diseases.

Thousands of Danes live with chronic inflammation of the intestinal system, with daily discomfort to follow in the form of stomach aches, diarrhoea and constipation. With her project, Magdalena Janina Laska will develop methods for studying biopsies from patients with chronic intestinal disease. The project is funded by a grant from the Aage and Johanne Louise Hansens Foundation.

If it is possible to create the optimum growth conditions for the biopsies, this will open the door to a wide range of experiments in the future under controlled conditions in a cellular laboratory. More precisely, the researchers are planning to examine the activity of various anti-inflammatory drugs on both the inflammatory and metabolic functions in tissue from healthy people and from patients with chronic intestinal diseases.
