From Sri Lanka to Denmark: Studying Technology Based Business Development
Time feels like it has flown by. Reflecting on my journey from Colombo, Sri Lanka, to Denmark, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunities, challenges, and growth that have shaped me. Now nearing 29, I can’t help but feel a mix of pride and excitement as I step into the next phase of my life.
A Childhood Across Borders
Born in Colombo, I grew up the middle child of my family, and at the age of five, we relocated to Malawi in Africa, where I spent my formative years. Malawi gifted me a childhood rich with cultural diversity, life lessons, and cricket-filled days (a big shout out to St. Andrews International High School!). It was a time when ambitions were not yet fully formed, but seeds of curiosity and resilience were being planted.
The First Leap: Malaysia
At 18, I ventured to Malaysia to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics Engineering at Monash University. The rigorous programme tested and honed my technical skills, preparing me for the dynamic industrial world. By the time I graduated, I was eager to return to my roots in Sri Lanka to apply what I had learned.
Building a Career in Sri Lanka
Back in Sri Lanka, I began my career with MAS Active, a leading apparel manufacturer. For three years, I worked as a Technology Entrepreneur, driving innovation in wearable technology. From conceptualising designs to bringing products to market, I collaborated with globally renowned brands like Lacoste and Lululemon. This role taught me to solve real world problems, pushing the boundaries of apparel technology and embedding a passion for innovation in my career. Working on a project for the Cricket World Cup Jersey was a special moment for me, being a huge fan of the sport myself.
A Nordic Dream: Denmark
When Sri Lanka faced financial turmoil, I knew it was time to take a leap of faith. Supported by family, I moved to Denmark in 2023 to pursue a Master’s in Technology Based Business Development (TBBD) at Aarhus University. This decision was fueled by pursuing a degree that had a fine balance of business and technology. However, it was also an opportunity to explore Europe as it has been a continent I had always admired. It is quite interesting to see how each country in Europe is so different but also united to function and support each other.
Life in Denmark
Arriving in Aarhus, the “City of Smiles,” was both thrilling and daunting. I quickly adapted to life here, finding warmth in the local culture and the opportunities that Denmark had to offer. A pivotal moment for me was securing a student job with Siemens Gamesa (now Siemens Energy), where I gained hands-on experience in HSE, Operational Excellence and wind energy projects.
Studying at Aarhus University has been an enriching experience. The focus on collaboration and real world applications has deepened my understanding of technology management and innovation. Completing my thesis in partnership with VELUX, exploring innovative roof window solutions, was a highlight of this journey because of the opportunity to work with a Danish firm within my first year living in Aarhus.
Beyond Academics
Denmark has also been a canvas for personal growth. From organising networking events in Hamburg to exploring European cities, my time here has expanded my horizons. I’ve gained a deeper appreciation for architecture, culture, and the power of community.
Looking Ahead
As I prepare to graduate, I am excited about the opportunities ahead. Denmark has given me a platform to dream bigger and grow both professionally and personally. The support of my family, friends, and mentors has been invaluable, and I carry the lessons of resilience and gratitude with me.
During my time here, I have been inspired and energised. Having grown up experiencing Africa and Asia, it has been a refreshing change to live in Europe and enhance my learning and growth.
I am a proud Sri Lankan, deeply grateful for the path that has brought me to where I am today, and I look forward to contributing to Denmark with my skills, knowledge and the experiences I have gained thus far to help the nation. Here's to the journey ahead!
