Expert in fungus comes to Aarhus
Maiken Cavling Arendrup has taken up the position of honorary professor in fungal infections at Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital. Her position will strengthen collaboration with the researchers in Aarhus who work in this area.
Fungi are in focus for Maiken Cavling Arendrup, who brings her knowledge in this area to Aarhus from 1 December 2013.
Through her research in fungal infections, better known as mycology in the medical world, she and her research team have discovered that we in Denmark have far more serious fungal infections than in the other Scandinavian countries, and that the frequency of infections with resistant fungi is increasing. And this can be a problem for weakened patients in particular.
“Fungi can cause superficial infections such as thrush in the mouth, ringworm and nail infections. But fungi can also cause serious and life-threatening infections in patients who already weakened by diseases such as cancer, leukaemia and lung diseases,” explains Maiken Cavling Arendrup.
Correct and rapid diagnostics can significantly reduce mortality. It is therefore important that a correct diagnosis is quickly made.
Better knowledge sharing
Maiken Cavling Arendrup hopes that her honorary professorship will help to strengthen knowledge sharing in the field.
“A strong collaboration between the medical doctors carrying out treatment, the local microbiological departments and specialists in Aarhus is crucial for ensuring research at a high level. Through strong research networks we can achieve the fastest knowledge sharing, and that will ultimately benefit the patients in Aarhus,” says Maiken Cavling Arendrup.
She is trained as a medical doctor and attained a PhD degree from the University of Copenhagen in 1993. In 2013 she defended her doctoral dissertation at the University of Copenhagen.
Maiken Cavling Arendrup was born on 14 April 1961 in Copenhagen, Denmark. She lives in Kgs. Lyngby in the vicinity of Copenhagen together with her husband.
