Cancer researcher appointed as new professor at Aarhus University
Per Rugaard Poulsen has been appointed professor at Aarhus University. Here he will conduct research into how to give the best radiation therapy with the fewest possible side effects.
The new professor works with the challenges of how cancer tumours and organs often move about in a patient during radiation therapy. These movements give rise to uncertainties in the treatment and mean that doctors are forced to use radiation on an expanded area of the body, which increases the risk of side effects.
Per Rugaard Poulsen examines how it is possible to determine the movements of a patient during a session of radiation therapy, what the consequences of these movements are for the radiation therapy, and how best to adapt radiation therapy to this.
The aim of the research is to develop better and more precise radiation therapy that can be adapted to when the tumour moves and when changes take place in the body. This will lead to a more concentrated radiation dose in the tumour, so that the healthy tissue surrounding the tumour receives less radiation. This in turn increases the likelihood of patients being cured without side effects.
