Award winner has warmed Danish hearts for decades

Professor Hans Erik Bøtker from Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital receives the Marie and August Krogh Award 2018 for his research into heart disease. The award includes a cash prize of DKK 1.5 million and is awarded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation and the Organisation of Danish Medical Societies.

Acute heart attacks are the most frequent cause of death and, for those who survive, subsequent illness. One in four people die of cardiovascular disease with a blood clot in the heart as the biggest killer by far.

Professor of heart medicine Hans Erik Bøtker has spent more than thirty years carrying out research into curing heart disease. This has e.g. led to the development of a method whereby the use of a simple blood pressure cuff can keep a heart beating in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.

For his outstanding research efforts Hans Erik Bøtker receives the Marie and August Krogh Award, which is awarded annually to an outstanding health researcher in Denmark. The award includes a cash prize of DKK 1.5 million that is divided into DKK 250,000 as a personal prize and DKK 1,250,000 as a research grant.
