Award winner fights for free antenatal classes for all pregnant women

Associate Professor and Midwife Rikke Damkjær Maimburg from Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital receives this year’s “A good start in life” award for her efforts in research to benefit new and future parents.

Having a child and becoming a family is one of the biggest moments in anyone’s life – but it is also an event that demands well-prepared parents. And if anyone knows this it is Rikke Damkjær Maimburg. She carries out research into prevention before pregnancy and receives the “A good start in life” award 2019 for her extraordinary efforts in demonstrating that the reintroduction of free antenatal classes in Denmark would be a good investment.

In her research, Rikke Damkjær Maimburg has established that women, who follow antenatal courses in smaller classes, are less concerned and need less medical pain relief. She has also shown that they are more often already in active childbirth when they arrive at the maternity ward and have a good childbirth experience. The women also know more about breastfeeding and are more confident about it.
