American specialist in paediatric urology affiliated with AU and AUH

For the next four years, Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital can enjoy Paul F. Austin’s expertise within paediatric urology. He has just been appointed honorary professor at the Department of Urology.

Professor Paul F. Austin is a medical doctor and specialist in paediatric urology. With his long-standing experience in basic clinical research, he will help to strengthen international collaboration between AU, AUH and the USA.

One of the focal points in his academic career has been blockages in the urinary tract and the treatment of lower urinary tract infections in children. Blockages of the urinary tract continue to be the leading cause of renal failure among children and young people. The challenge is to identify the twenty per cent of foetuses with fluid on the kidneys in which the condition is permanent and leads to the loss of renal function.

For this purpose, Paul F. Austin’s research group has found factors that help regulate the kidney’s formation of scar tissue and repair mechanisms. The hope is to be able to use this knowledge to find the children who are at risk of long-term loss of kidney function and offer them targeted medical treatment.
