Aarhus University gets a new professor of orthopaedic surgery

Consultant Maiken Stilling from Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital is a new clinical professor of orthopaedic surgery. She is Denmark’s first female professor in her field and has gained international recognition for her innovative research into joint functioning and joint prostheses.

Maiken Stilling conducts research into – and treatment of – joints suffering from instability or arthritis. Together with her research group, she has developed an automated diagnostic imaging analysis method called AutoRSA, which provides doctors with a better understanding of joint stability and functioning.

With a single dynamic x-ray examination of the movement or joint strain that is causing the patient pain, AutoRSA can visualise and measure the dysfunction in a joint with ligament damage or the loosening of a joint prostheses. This makes it possible for orthopaedic surgeons to measure what is not functioning and to adapt treatment accordingly.

Maiken Stilling and her research group are also working to improve the prevention and treatment of bone and joint infections using antibiotics.
