It’s no secret that global literary canons have long been dominated by men. However, a new generation of women across Latin America and Spain are emerging as the primary literary voices both in their respective countries, as well as on the international literary market in translation. We are, in essence, in the midst of a new type of Spanish-language literary “boom,” only this time it is feminist, sex-positive, and unfolding alongside movements such as #niunamenos and #metoo.  

The works we will discuss address a range of topics and lenses, such as disability, gender and sexuality, violence, race, translation, and migration. We will also engage with media and podcasts such as Hablemos escritoras alongside our readings, and as we will be reading in English translation, we will also confront questions of textual circulation and world literature. No knowledge of Spanish is required.
