The position is to be filled by 1 August 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter (subject to negotiation).

The position
This tenure track position will contribute to the establishment of a strong research and teaching program on satellite-based remote sensing studies of ecosystem dynamics. The appointee will be member of Section for Ecoinformatics and Biodiversity (ECOINF) and Center for Biodiversity Dynamics in a Changing World (BIOCHANGE). During the first 4 years, the appointee’s research will be part of professor Jens-Christian Svenning’s VILLUM Investigator project, a core part of BIOCHANGE, and under his mentorship contribute to its focus on employing new technologies for achieving the urgently needed progress on how to tackle the massive and building pressure on the biosphere. The appointee is expected to engage extensively in collaborations with other staff members in ECOINF and BIOCHANGE as well as across the Department of Bioscience and the university, and to participate in and, in part, lead undergraduate and graduate teaching and supervision.

Our working language at ECOINF and BIOCHANGE is English, but the appointee is expected to invest in learning Danish to the level of being able to teach in Danish after 4 years of employment.

Participation in and development of public outreach and/or community engagement programmes, and performance of departmental and university service are an expected and integral part of positions within our
Department.

Applicants should present their future research avenues and visions for building an independent research group, as well as how they plan to obtain future funding. Qualifications in teaching will be evaluated, and the applicants are encouraged to describe which courses they would like to contribute to and develop in the future.

The candidate
We seek an internationally competitive early-career researcher with an excellent academic track record in satellite-based remote sensing studies of ecosystem dynamics. Applicants must in their application present a work plan and research strategy for their proposed research within the field of remote sensing and ecosystem dynamics. Moreover, the candidate must be able to demonstrate promise of outstanding capabilities in independent research, dissemination, and funding. A tenure track appointment requires demonstration of independent and novel research initiatives combined with successful postdoc positions including international experience as demonstrated by a significant number of international publications.

Successful candidates are expected to:

• Conduct research of the highest international standard
• Establish and develop their own research space within the Department
• Establish synergies between own research and other related research activities;
• Contribute to relevant teaching and supervision at the Department
• Be able to communicate and teach in Danish within four years after employment
• Supervise bachelor, masters and PhD students
• Complete postgraduate teacher training for Assistant Professors at Aarhus University
• Be granted competitive research funding from external funding bodies
• Contribute to the Department strategy and working environment

Depending on the qualifications of the appointee, they will have the opportunity to apply for a competitive start-up grant to facilitate a successful start in building their research at Aarhus University, i.e., in addition to the funding provided via professor Svenning’s VILLUM Investigator project.

Qualifications
The following professional and personal qualifications are required:

• PhD degree in ecology, geography or related field
• Documented high-level research qualifications
• Proven publication record in international peer-reviewed journals
• Experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision
• Experience in communication of research in a wide context;
• Experience in international research collaboration and networking
• Ability to write and speak English fluently

The Department of Bioscience
The Department of Bioscience hosts research programmes, teaching curricula and consultancy that cover all major biological sub-disciplines. The Department conducts world-class research in the areas of Aquatic Biology and Ecology, Arctic Environment and Ecosystems, Biodiversity and Conservation Biology, Genetics and Evolution, Microbiology, and Zoophysiology. As part of the Aarhus University Tenure Track Programme, the University carries out a mid-way evaluation to review the progress of the tenure track candidate after three years, according to the same criteria used in the final tenure review. The final tenure review is conducted after five and a half years. In case of a positive review, the candidate will be offered a tenured position as Associate Professor/Senior Researcher at Aarhus University.

Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants, including the main considerations emphasized during the selection process.

Formalities and salary range
Science and Technology refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
