Assistant professor or associate professor in applied cultural analysis 952289

The School of Communication and Culture invites applications for an assistant professorship or an associate professorship in applied cultural analysis. 
The assistant professorship is a full-time, three-year training position; and subject to appropriate funding, there will be an opportunity to apply for a subsequent associate professorship. The associate professorship is a permanent position. 
The successful applicant will be expected to begin on 1 August 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The job is based at the School of Communication and Culture in Aarhus.

The position
The position includes tasks in all of Aarhus University’s core activities in the areas of research, teaching, talent development and knowledge exchange. 
The position involves theoretical and empirical research on cultural politics, policies, management and leadership in collaboration with cultural institutions, associations and public authorities. The successful applicant should be able to identify and develop research projects in collaboration with partners outside the university, both independently and in response to requests or calls from institutions, public authorities or funding agencies.
The position will include teaching and developing courses at BA and MA level in subjects such as cultural politics, cultural policy-making, institutional analysis, qualitative and/or quantitative methodology and internships/field studies. Experience of teaching and supervision at both BA and MA level is required when applying for the associate professorship. If an assistant professor is appointed, the person concerned must be prepared to attend Aarhus University’s special teacher-training course for assistant professors.
Knowledge exchange
It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in knowledge exchange activities as mentioned in the strategy for the Faculty of Arts, for instance government consultancy, cooperation with civil society actors or the public dissemination of knowledge. If an associate professor is appointed, he/she will be expected to take part in public debates on issues related to their field of research.         
Talent development
The position involves supervision tasks at both BA and MA level, and – if an associate professor is appointed – at PhD level as well. 
General qualifications
Applications are invited from applicants with competences at assistant or associate professor level. Applicants must provide documentary evidence of a relevant PhD degree or similar qualifications.
Key criteria of the assessment will be the quality of the research output, which is expected to meet international standards, and successful teaching experience at university level within the field of applied cultural analysis.
The School of Communication and Culture emphasises the significance of high-quality research and attaches great importance to interdisciplinary collaboration, participation in collective research projects, and the ability to attract external research funding. Accordingly, we are looking for a dedicated candidate who can document and demonstrate: 
  • a wide-ranging knowledge of contemporary cultural politics and policies, and of the management and leadership of cultural institutions and projects.
  • experience of qualitative and/or quantitative research methods in relation to cultural analysis.
  • experience of interdisciplinary research collaboration and the development of research problems and strategies in partnership with institutions, organisations or public authorities outside the university.
Applicants for the assistant professorship must be able to document:
  • research (e.g. a dissertation) and the outline for a research project within the areas described above.  
Applicants for the associate professorship must be able to document:
  • research publications corresponding at least to the level achieved during an assistant professorship and demonstrating the in-depth analysis of issues related to the development of cultural policies and management strategies, legislation and policy decision-making processes related to cultural politics, and/or the history, organisation and function of cultural institutions.  
  •  strong communicative skills and experience of participation in public media.
In addition, it will be considered an advantage if applicants can demonstrate:
  • research concerning the relationship/schism between national and international tendencies in cultural politics and consumer behaviour. 
  • research that compares the development of cultural policies and management strategies across different cultural fields.
  • research that develops new methodologies, e.g. relating to formative research or evaluation.
If the successful applicant does not speak Danish, he or she will be required to acquire sufficient Danish within two years of commencing the appointment to participate fully in the activities of the School of Communication and Culture. In order to maintain and develop the department’s excellent research environment, the person appointed is expected to be present at the department on a daily basis. Participation in the daily life of the department is a high priority, and we emphasise the importance of good working relationships, both among colleagues and with our students.
