Two Postdoc positions on effects of research funding instruments 1022987

The Danish Centre for Studies in Research and Research Policy (CFA) at Department of Political Science, Aarhus BSS, Aarhus University invites applications for two 3-year postdoctoral positions related to projects concerned with the effects of research funding instruments. The expected starting date for the fulltime positions will be April 1, 2019 or as soon as possible hereafter.

The research projects
The positions will mainly (but not exclusively) be linked to two new research projects at CFA.

The first project, ‘Promoting the socio-economic impact of research – the role of funding practices’ is a comparative study of the effects of research funding instruments with the intent to promote socio-economic impact. The project covers three countries, Denmark, Norway and the Netherlands, and two major fields of research, food science and energy research, and will be drawing on both quantitative and qualitative methods in analyses of funding landscapes, funding instruments and case studies of 18 selected research groups. The project is funded by the Novo Nordic Foundation and will run for four years starting from January 2019.

The second project, ‘Villum Experiment – a study of the influence of blind peer review on the nature and outcomes of funded research’ is a study of a new innovative research funding mechanism. Drawing on both quantitative and qualitative methods this project will examine questions related to whether this new funding instrument has effects that differ from standard grant types based on conventional peer-review processes. Key cross-cutting themes in this project is to what extent the Villum Experiment promotes and generates original research and to what extent it reduces biases in the allocation processes? The project is funded by the Villum Foundation as a two-year study, but it will carried out part-time over a four year period. Hence, the Postdoc related to this project will also be involved in other CFA projects. Other types of involvement will also be relevant for the Postdoc related to the first project, but to a lesser extent.

Job description
As part of small, interdisciplinary project teams, both postdoc positions will cover a variety of tasks including both research design, data collection, analysis and dissemination. The selected candidates will also be expected to contribute substantially to publications, both as first and secondary authors. The candidates will, however, also be expected to contribute more broadly to CFA’s general activities.
The ideal candidates will have a PhD in social science or related fields. We seek applicants with strong and broad methodological skills and preferably also experience with science policy studies in general and studies of funding systems in particular. We expect the candidates to have excellent communication skills in spoken and written English, and an ability to produce state-of-the art social-science research.
